The ‘Thunderbolts*’ Asterisk Theory Might Explain the Meaning of the Symbol
Thanks to Deadpool and Wolverine having a strong run in theaters and the exciting news that Robert Downey Jr. will return as Victor Von Doom as the MCU’s next big nemesis, the future of the MCU seems bright again after a run of lackluster movies.
Before the next two big Avengers movies, which will have Robert Downey Jr. as the primary antagonist, are released, the MCU will release a variety of other projects. Among those projects that are more anticipated than some others is the upcoming Thunderbolts* movie, which is set to be released on May 2, 2025.
The movie itself is a very mysterious project and we’ve just seen a new trailer that revealed some elements of the story but opened even more questions. We know that one of the biggest mysteries of that show is the asterisk in the title and we have some theories as to what it could mean.
Not that long ago, actor David Harbour, who is playing the Red Guardian in the movie, revealed the following piece of information related to the asterisk:
After that, Thunderbolts is coming up and you’re reprising that role in the MCU. Do you know why there is an asterisk in the title?
David Harbour: Yes. (Laughs)
When did you find out why there was an asterisk in the title?
David Harbour: I mean, they retroactively put the asterisk (in). The asterisk was an idea that that someone had…..What can I say that’s not going to get me in trouble? …The asterisk is very cool. I understand why people might put an asterisk there (laughs) I’m excited for the viewers to see that as well. But I, again, I just can’t say anymore.

Now, Harbour did not reveal much, but there is definitely a catch there. While the fans have been speculating about the true meaning of the asterisk, no one definitively knows what it symbolizes. However, as we’ve said, there are numerous theories.
As for us, we think that there is a possibility that the asterisk suggests that the Thunderbolts are not really the Thunderbolts, but rather a completely different group that is only being marketed as the Thunderbolts. This is why the asterisk is there as a “warning” that the situation should not be taken so literally.
So, who could they be? Well, they could be either the Secret Avengers or the Dark Avengers, and since Marvel would want to avoid brand mixing with the main Avengers, especially since the latter is in a very strange place right now. It could be that they went with the Thunderbolts brand for now. We shall see.
