Robert Kirkman, the mind behind The Walking Dead, has made his feelings about Negan crystal clear in a bold and unfiltered statement aimed at those who despise the ruthless character. His message, which doesn’t shy away from strong language, gives us a peek into his creative process—a feeling that many writers can understand or wish to experience.

Kirkman acknowledges that not everyone loves Negan. In fact, some Walking Dead fans and even one cast member are vocal about their dislike for the character. However, in the latest issue of The Walking Dead Deluxe #103, Kirkman shows no hesitation in defending Negan’s place in the story.

This issue is particularly noteworthy as it marks Negan’s complete domination, with Rick Grimes being forced out of leadership, drastically shifting the group’s dynamics.

Negan quickly became a favorite for Kirkman, who found the character’s intense personality made the writing process flow effortlessly. He admitted that scenes with Negan would almost write themselves, often filling up pages faster than anticipated.

Kirkman explained that writing for Negan could sometimes make an entire issue feel shorter because of how much space his dialogue consumed. Despite the controversy surrounding Negan, Kirkman stands by his creation.

He even offers a tongue-in-cheek apology to Steven Yeun, who played Glenn Rhee in the TV series. Glenn’s brutal death at Negan’s hands, using the infamous barbed-wire bat Lucille, is one of the most unforgettable and heart-wrenching moments for many fans. It’s no surprise that Yeun might not share Kirkman’s fondness for the character.

In the deluxe edition, Kirkman doesn’t just narrate this pivotal moment; he also answers readers’ burning questions and shares his personal insights. Among these, he passionately addresses the criticism directed at Negan, telling those who dislike him: “I know some people hate Negan. Those people can f***ing f*** the f*** off. (Sorry, Steven).
