Theory Claims Marvel Has Already Set Up Loki’s MCU Return

Despite His Role, Tom Hiddleston's Loki Is Not Such a Bad Guy, as His MCU Kill Count Confirms

More than a year ago, Loki’s journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe seemed to reach its perfect conclusion. After dodging an early plan to kill him off in Phase 2, Thor’s adopted brother completes a transformation from villain to reluctant hero, sacrificing his freedom to save countless lives. But his story didn’t stop there.

In Loki Season 2, we saw him ascend to an entirely new role as the God of Stories, sitting on a throne at the center of the multiverse. This heartbreaking twist tied together his entire character arc, even fulfilling Odin’s prophecy of Loki ruling from a throne.

While there’s no sign of a third season, his return feels inevitable, especially with the Multiverse Saga heading for its big finale. One of the more surprising hints about Loki’s future may come from What If…? Season 3. Tom Hiddleston didn’t appear as his main Loki, only as a Frost Giant version planning to turn Jotunheim into a luxury ski resort. But the show’s finale introduced ideas that could pave the way for Loki’s next big role.

Loki’s sacrifice in Season 2 felt final, but the stakes in Marvel’s upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars make it hard to imagine him staying out of the picture. The multiverse is in danger, and if the movie follows the original comics, all of existence could be at risk.

While Loki’s role as protector of the multiverse might suggest non-interference, standing by while everything collapses feels out of character for someone who has fought so hard to control his own destiny, according to a theory.

Marvel’s multiverse rules are famously confusing, with terms like threads, planes, and dimensions often used interchangeably. However, Loki’s position at the multiverse’s core feels too important to ignore, especially with the post-credits scene from The Marvels showing different realities crashing together. Loki could be the key to preventing total disaster.

But what if Loki’s role as the God of Stories puts him in the crosshairs of the main villain in Secret Wars? If Doctor Doom emerges as the big bad, Loki might need to sacrifice himself—or his position—to stop him. However, a more exciting twist would be Loki choosing to intervene, setting up an epic confrontation.

One moment from What If…? stands out as a possible connection. The Watcher, Uatu, faced judgment from other Watchers for breaking their rule of non-interference. Instead of backing down, he argued that simply observing wasn’t enough.

Using a garden metaphor, he said, ‘A garden must be cultivated to thrive,’ suggesting that harmful elements must be removed for growth. This echoes the TVA’s controversial mission under He Who Remains but with a more balanced approach.

Could Loki have a similar revelation? His role as the God of Stories might push him to realize that protecting the multiverse sometimes requires action.

It’s also interesting that Uatu’s metaphor about cultivating a garden mirrors Loki’s new throne beneath the roots of a massive tree. This parallel hints at a possible moment where Loki must step away from his role for the greater good.

Marvel might not have confirmed Loki’s return yet, but leaving him out of the Multiverse Saga’s conclusion would be a huge mistake. His journey is far from over, and the groundwork is already there to bring him back for one last, universe-shaping move.
