Many will say that Tom Cruise saved theaters in the post-pandemic era thanks to the success of Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel to the 1986 cult classic aviation movie directed by the late Tony Scott. In an area of streaming, Cruise insisted on theatrical releases, and it was a well-made gamble, as Maverick earned an amazing $1.496 billion worldwide, becoming the second highest-grossing movie of the year (behind Avatar 2) and the highest-grossing in Cruise’s career. The movie also earned numerous awards and nominations, being critically acclaimed.

Now, soaring on the success of the sequel (pun intended), it makes sense that the studio and the producers wanted to bring us another sequel, and we all know that the movie, tentatively titled Top Gun 3, is in active development.

Now, with Tom Cruise working on the latest Mission: Impossible film, the Top Gun sequel is still in the early stages of development, but producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that Cruise will be returning to one of his most famous roles and that he has already said “yes” to the draft of the story. Here’s what Bruckheimer revealed:

It will be Tom Cruise. Tom is amazing. We spent time with him. We have a story. Joe Kosinski had a wonderful story idea for it, and he (Tom Cruise) said I really like that, so we’re developing it. But you never know when it’s going to get made because Tom is so busy. He’s doing Mission: Impossible right now, he’s got a picture after it. Hopefully, we’ll get a screenplay that he loves, and we’ll be back in the air again.

As you can see, this is some great news, and fans can look forward to the upcoming third film of the Top Gun series. Knowing how meticulous Cruise is with his scripts, the fact that he likes the story idea certainly means a lot. The movie probably won’t be out before 2026, but filming could start later this year or next year, based on what is known about Cruise’s schedule.
