Tom Cavanagh, best known for playing Reverse-Flash and multiple versions of Harrison Wells on The Flash TV show, recently shared his opinion on the The Flash movie during Fan Expo Portland. The 2023 film had a rough release, failing to meet expectations despite being a long-awaited entry in the DCEU timeline.

Speaking about the movie, Cavanagh admitted he had seen it and even liked it. He acknowledged the challenges the film faced, including the off-screen controversies surrounding Ezra Miller.

While protective of Grant Gustin’s portrayal of Barry Allen, Cavanagh said he appreciated how the movie made Barry feel ‘more innocent and different.’ He added, ‘They purposely lowered his IQ a bit, which was a smart move because it created a fresh take instead of copying what we did for ten years.’

Cavanagh also praised Michael Keaton’s return as Batman, calling it an exciting moment. He pointed out, though, that Batman’s heavy presence in the film’s marketing spoke volumes. Referring to the DVD cover featuring Batman instead of The Flash, he implied it revealed where the studio thought the real draw was.

On the movie’s divisive CGI-heavy ending, Cavanagh empathized with the challenges of tackling such effects in a superhero film. He felt the first half of the movie was particularly well-executed, especially its unique take on Barry’s origin story.

He also recalled a past conversation with DC’s Geoff Johns about competition with Marvel, where Johns said, ‘What’s good for comic books is good for all of us.’

Although The Flash movie had its share of ups and downs, Cavanagh appreciated how it stayed different from the TV series while still bringing something fresh to the character.

However, the film remains a polarizing chapter in the DCEU, with mixed reviews from fans, critics, and even those who worked within the franchise.
