Twisted ‘Popeye’s Revenge’ Horror Movie Releases First Trailer
We all know Popeye as the tough sailor who settles scores with his fists and a can of spinach. But now, he’s taking a darker turn. In a new horror movie from ITN Studios, Popeye is stepping into the slasher genre, delivering more than just his usual beatdowns.
Recently, promo stills gave us a sneak peek, and now the first trailer for the film Popeye’s Revenge has dropped, courtesy of Bloody Disgusting (see below). Following the trend set by Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood and Honey, this indie flick reimagines the spinach-loving sailor as a violent killer. It’s the latest twist in the wave of classic characters getting horror makeovers.
This is just one of two Popeye horror films coming this year. The second, Popeye The Slayer Man, is also on the horizon. The new movie is described as a ‘raunchy and gory slasher.’ For the record, it’s not tied to the “Poohniverse” from Twisted Childhood Universe.
Before we reveal more information, here is the trailer, as we have promised:
The plot centers on a group of camp counselors haunted by the legend of Popeye. Stephen Murphy plays Popeye, with Rene August producing and William Stead directing. The movie promises to deliver what you’d expect from such a wild concept, and it might be a fun watch for horror fans.
The Popeye character, created by Elzie Crisler Segar, first appeared in 1929 and became a pop culture icon through various media, including the famous ’30s cartoons by Max Fleischer. While Sony scrapped plans for a new animated Popeye film in 2010, a live-action version is now in the works at Chernin Entertainment, with a script by Michael Caleo.
It looks like Popeye is ready to shock us again, this time with a bloody twist.
