Two 'Pirates of the Caribbean' Movies Are Actually in the Works, Bruckheimer Confirms

The 2003 premiere of The Curse of the Black Pearl launched the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, a series of movies that soon became one of the most popular franchises of all time and was a massive success for Disney. The franchise was led by one of the biggest stars of that period, Johnny Depp, whose charismatic appearance as Jack Sparrow became a pillar of pop culture. While we cannot deny that the overall quality of the movies dropped by the time the fifth movie was released, as a whole, it is still one of the most popular franchises of all time. Now, it has been seven years since the last movie in the series, and while we did know that Disney was working on reviving the franchise, we did not know – due to conflicting reports – what they were working on.

In an exclusive talk with Entertainment Weekly, series producer Jerry Bruckheimer finally cleared up the future of the franchise and revealed that Disney is simultaneously working on two very different movies, one main one and one spin-off movie.

We have recently reported that a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie is in the works, but the initial reports were conflicting, with some news stating that it would be a complete reboot of the series, while others stated that it would be a continuation of the series with Margot Robbie taking over the main role. Not long ago, Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed that Disney was indeed working on a reboot and we have recently reported that he would like to bring Johnny Depp back, although in a smaller role now.

This might have confused a lot of fans, but Bruckheimer finally revealed the state of things, and we now know that Disney is working on not one, but two movies: a soft reboot/sequel film, as well as a spin-off movie with Robbie. Here is what he said:

“It’s two different movies. We hope to get ’em both made, and I think Disney agrees they really want to make the Margot one, too.”

So, the media reports were not false, but they were not precise. As far as we understand, Bruckheimer and Disney are slightly prioritizing the reboot that Bruckheimer is working on with Young Woman and the Sea scribe Jeff Nathanson, who is writing the script, while the Robbie movie is being written by Christina Hodson from Birds of Prey. Bruckheimer also commented on his movie:

“I think he’s cracked it. He’s got an amazing third act. We just gotta clean up the first and second and then we’ll get there. But he wrote a great, great third act.”

And that is all that we know at this moment. This confirms that the future of the Pirates of the Caribbean series is not as directionless as many thought and that Disney or Bruckheimer know what they want to do and where they want to go. Of course, all of the projects are still in the early development pages, so it will be some time before we have some precise information, but be sure to keep following us, as we on Fiction Horizon are going to bring you all the updates on the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise as soon as they arrive.
