‘Until Dawn’ Movie Breaks Away from the Game with a Fresh Story

Sony is working on a movie adaptation of the horror game Until Dawn, aiming for release this year. Unlike many game-to-film projects, this movie won’t retell the game’s story or feature its original characters. Instead, it will introduce a fresh plot set within the Until Dawn universe.

At the recent Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025, actor Peter Stormare, known for portraying Dr. Alan J. Hill in the game, confirmed his return in the same role for the film. He mentioned that the movie will present a new storyline with a different set of characters, maintaining only his character as a link to the game’s world. This means we won’t see the game’s original cast, like Rami Malek or Hayden Panettiere, in the film.

The game’s interactive nature, where player choices influence the narrative through a butterfly effect system, poses a unique challenge for a film adaptation. In the game, decisions lead to various outcomes, enhancing replayability.

Translating this experience to a linear movie format requires creative adjustments to capture the essence of choice and consequence that fans appreciate.

Until Dawn was first released on PlayStation 4 in 2015 and received a remake for PlayStation 5 and PC on October 4, 2024, the remake introduced an altered ending, potentially setting the stage for a sequel. However, no official sequel has been announced yet.

This film is part of Sony’s broader initiative to adapt its video game properties into movies and TV series. Following the success of The Last of Us TV show, which is set to premiere its second season in April, Sony has also announced a movie adaptation of Helldivers 2.

While specific details about the Until Dawn movie’s plot remain under wraps, the decision to craft a new story within the same universe offers an opportunity to explore different aspects of the game’s lore. This approach allows the film to stand on its own, providing surprises for both newcomers and longtime fans.

As we await more information, it’s clear that the Until Dawn movie aims to deliver a fresh horror experience, distinct from the game’s narrative, while preserving the atmospheric tension that made the original game memorable.
