Vinland Saga Season 2: Release Date, Trailer, Plot, Cast and More
Vinland Saga is one of those rare anime gems that managed to prove its quality, while being quite original and in a lot of ways different from how anime is usually perceived. Based on the critically acclaimed manga by Makoto Yukimura, Vinland Saga has been praised by critics since its debut in 2019 for its authenticity, originality, and character development. A second season of the show is in development and in this article, we are going to tell you everything you need to know about it.
Vinland Saga season 2 has been officially confirmed and is currently in development. Shūhei Yabuta is returning as director, and Takahiko Abiru is returning as character designer. An official release date has not been given, but we assume that the show is going to premiere either in late 2022 or early 2023, based on the estimates we have now.
The rest of this article is going to bring you all the known and unknown information related to the upcoming second season of Vinland Saga. You’re going to find out about its potential release date, whether there is a trailer, what the story could be about, and much more about this great anime series.
Vinland Saga Season 2 release date
At this moment, Vinland Saga consists of one anime season, which premiered on July 7, 2019 and ended on December 29, 2019 after a total of 24 episodes. These episodes adapted the first 54 chapters of the manga, reaching the second half of volume 8 of the manga. The manga is currently on 25 published volumes, which means that there is more than enough material to adapt, which had fans hopeful that a second season would be announced soon after the end of the first season. But that wasn’t exactly the case.
Namely, Vinland Saga was never a hit such as Demon Slayer or Jujutsu Kaisen, when newer works are concerned. The fandom is small, but the fans are pretty devoted and that is why the producers were so slow to announce any plans for future seasons of the show.
Still, on July 7, 2021, almost two years after the first season ended, it was officially confirmed that Vinland Saga would be getting a second season, which made the small fandom of the series quite happy. Save for some production and crew information, nothing else has been confirmed by the producers, the release date (or window) included. This means that we do not know when season two of Vinland Saga is coming, but we do know that it is probably going to be sometime this years, since it’s been more than a year since the official announcement.
Taking all of this into account, the second season of Vinland Saga is probably very close and will quite probably premiere during 2022, or early 2023 at most.
Vinland Saga Season 2 trailer
Now that we have presented you with all the information about season two of Vinland Saga, you’ve probably deduced by yourselves that it is still too early for a proper trailer for the upcoming season, meaning that there is none at this moment. The season has only recently been announced and has entered into production not long ago, so we’ll just have to wait for a release window for the second season go have a more precise window for the trailer’s release.
As we have said, Vinland Saga will definitely come back very soon, but it’s still too early in the production for a trailer. The show is very popular and it did not surprise us that it had been renewed for a new season. Still, as of this moment, we still don’t have any official information on the new season’s release date, so we’ll have to wait a bit for the trailer to appear. What we do have, though, is an official teaser, which you can check out here:
Taking into account everything we’ve said, a trailer for Vinland Saga season two is unlikely to appear before the end of 2022, possibly even 2023, depending on when the upcoming second season will air.
Vinland Saga Season 2 plot
As we have said, we don’t know much about the second season of Vinland Saga, save for the fact that there is going to be a second season of Vinland Saga. We’ve stated that the first season ended with Chapter 54 of the manga and that there are more than 15 volumes to adapt as of this moment. How many of them are planned for Season 2 is still a mystery, so we’ll just bring you a general overview of the plot so that you know what you can expect from the upcoming episodes.
In the year 1002, Thorfinn is six years old and lives with his family in a small settlement in Iceland. Life there with his father Thors, his mother Helga and his older sister Ylfa is tough but carefree. His father, nicknamed the “Troll of Joms”, faked his death in a battle off Norway in order to desert from the Jomsvikings and disappeared with his wife to Iceland.
His mother is a daughter of King Sigvaldi. The only adventures bring the stories of the ridiculed Leif Eriksson, who tells of the discovery of the legendary Vinlands. But that changes when a warship pulls into port. On board is Floki, an envoy of King Sigvaldi of Jomsburg, who is blackmailing Thorfinn’s father into aiding her in the Battle of Britain.
This, a former war hero who has long renounced killing, reluctantly agrees and clears a ship to Jomsburg. He sets off with some overzealous young men from the village and accompanied by Leif. Thorfinn is secretly hiding on board. Meanwhile, in the Faroe Islands, Floki orders the leader of a mercenary force, Askeladd, to kill Thor.
So it soon comes to a duel between Askeladd and Thors, with Thorfinn’s father being the victor. However, he still loses his life when he tries to protect that of his son. Driven only by a desire for revenge, Thorfinn joins forces with Askeladd in order to one day defeat him in a fair duel. Six years later, Vikings, including Askeladd and his troupe, invaded England under Sweyn, King of the Danes.
Thorfinn does Askeladd’s dirty work in order to earn the right to ongoing dueling. In 1013 England seems to have lost the war. Only London, under the leadership of the Jomsviking Thorkell, withstands the besiegers. After another failed attack, resulting in a fight between Thorfinn and Thorkell, the Danes retreat and King Sweyn sends his youngest son, Knut, to continue the siege, but he too fails.
The prince and his trusty Ragnar are then pursued by Thorkell. As a result, Askeladd and his troop manage to get hold of the prince. Askeladd initially uses Canute as a political puppet; however, sacrifices himself to secure the throne for Canute. Robbed of his revenge, Thorfinn attacks the prince, but is overpowered and sold as a slave to a farmer. There Thorfinn ponders the future content of his life, while Canute intrigues to gain rulership of England.
Vinland Saga Season 2 cast
The principal cast of Vinland Saga won’t be changing very much, as far as we know. Some new characters will be introduced, that is certain, but the main cast will remain – for the most part – unchanged until the very end. This is why we think that the main voice cast, since that is an unwritten rule in modern-day anime adaptations, will return for the second season, but also for all potential future seasons.
We don’t have confirmation of that so we’ll have to wait a bit for it to be official, but we assume that most of the names in our table will return in future seasons of Vinland Saga:
Character | Japanese Voice Actor (Seiyū) |
---|---|
Askeladd | Naoya Uchida |
Thorfinn | Yuuto Uemura |
Canute | Kensho Ono |
Thorkell | Akio Ootsuka |
Thors | Kenichirou Matsuda |
Bjorn | Hiroki Yasumoto |
Leif | Yōji Ueda |
Why was Vinland Saga almost cancelled?
As far as the anime is concerned, Vinland Saga was never close to cancellation. If you’ve heard such rumors, you have to know that they refer exclusively to the American edition of the Vinland Saga manga. Namely, the manga had a very low readership in the United States and Kodansha pondered canceling the English language edition of the manga at one point, but the small, yet determined fandom managed to convince them to continue translating and publishing it.
This news was confirmed via Twitter several years ago, but we just wanted to make it clear that the anime was never really considered for cancelation.
Will there be a Vinland Saga Season 3?
And while it might be too early to discuss a potential third season of Vinland Saga, since we don’t even know officially when the second season is going to air (now that we know that it is in the works), but there are some great indicators that Vinland Saga will go on even after the upcoming second season.
Namely, Vinland Saga is still nowhere near its completion, as far as the manga is concerned, and the seasons probably won’t have a large number of episodes, which means that the producers have less space to develop the plot in one season, but also more space for new seasons seasons, as you don’t really want to rush such shows.
Seeing how Vinland Saga maintains a smaller, but devoted fandom is and how good it is doing, as well as taking into consideration the fact that the anime hasn’t adapted the whole story (the manga is still ongoing, so there’ll be a lot of new material to adapt), we know that the upcoming second season won’t wrap things up, meaning that a third season is looking very good. Still, we’ll have to wait for some official news to be sure.
