The Boys is one of the most popular superhero series in the world, and its fourth season recently ended on July 18, 2024. The season was Certified Fresh, and the viewership numbers confirmed that it was a major hit, surpassing even Season 3, despite some controversial fan comments.

But, while the season is over, The Boys franchise is expanding, as we are going to see more upcoming projects in the future. One of these upcoming projects is the planned prequel, spin-off series Vought Rising, which will show the origins of Vought International while also bringing back Aya Cash’s Stormfront and Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy.

Now, while talking to the media at the San Diego Comic-Con, which is where the series was revealed in the first place, The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke, who is overseeing the whole fictional universe, revealed more details about the production history of the series and what plans he has for the prequel.

Vought Rising, in case you’ve missed our earlier reports, will be a prequel series that explores the origins of Vought. Jensen Ackles and Aya Cash have been confirmed to return as Soldier Boy and Stormfront, respectively, while the showrunner of the series will be Paul Grellong, who also revealed the following info about the series:

“We are excited to bring you the next deranged series from the world of ‘The Boys.’ It’s a twisted murder mystery about the origins of Vought in the 1950s, the early exploits of Soldier Boy, and the diabolical maneuvers of a supe known to fans as Stormfront, who was then going by the name Clara Vought. We cannot wait to blow your minds and trouble your souls with this salacious, grisly saga drenched in blood and Compound V.”

As you can see, this is certainly going to be an exciting take on the fictional universe and some well-known characters, and as Kripke revealed at the SDCC: “For the record, I sent the pilot script… to Garth. He said, ‘Out of everything you guys have done, this one’s my favorite.'” The Boys showrunner also shared his excitement for the series, as well as the fact that it was initially rejected by Amazon:

“In 2020, I went to Amazon to pitch them two spin-offs. One was Gen V, and one was Vought Rising. They bought Gen V and said, depending on how it goes, we’ll do Vought Rising too. It just makes so much sense to me because The Boys, at its heart, is a film noir cops-and-robbers story. If you ask [comic co-creator] Garth Ennis what inspired The Boys, he says James Ellroy novels. To go back to the source and do L.A. Confidential with superheroes with fedoras and trenchcoats makes so much sense to me. It’s so visual and cool.”

And there you have it. We will certainly be following up on this story, so stick around for more updates on the upcoming prequel series.
