Warner Bros. Discovery is making moves in the animated realm with an ambitious project focusing on one of DC Comics’ most gripping narratives.
Jeff Wamester, known for his direction in the Tomorrowverse series, is set to lead a new animated trilogy based on ‘Batman: Knightfall‘.
This marks a thrilling development for Batman fans as ‘Knightfall’ has never been fully adapted into animation or film, despite its significance in the Batman saga.
The trilogy, with its first installment titled ‘Batman: Knightfall: Part 1’, was recently listed on the Entertainment Identifier Registry (EIDR), an online system for tracking audiovisual content.
Although initially set for a 2024 release with a runtime of one hour, these details might change, as Warner Bros. usually opts for a longer format, evident from previous animations that span at least 80 minutes.
‘Batman: Knightfall’ is renowned for the dramatic scene where Bane breaks Batman’s back, an event that has resonated through pop culture and notably featured in Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises’.
However, the aftermath of this iconic moment takes a twist many fans might not recall. Bruce Wayne, incapacitated by Bane, passes the Batman mantle to Jean-Paul Valley, also known as Azrael.
Azrael’s stint as Batman is marked by a more punitive approach to crime fighting, which eventually forces a recovered Bruce, along with Robin and Nightwing, to intervene.
This new trilogy promises to dive deep into this layered narrative, potentially following the original comic’s tripartite structure of ‘Knightfall’, ‘Knightquest’, and ‘Knightsend’.
While fans can anticipate some adherence to the source material, Warner Bros. has a history of modifying stories for their animated adaptations, as seen with ‘Batman: Hush’.
Given the early stages of development, the exact release timing remains uncertain, but we’re likely looking at an early 2025 premiere.
