What Caused the Conjunction of the Spheres? (First & Second)
The Witcher has a lot of different supernatural elements that are quite fantastic and incredible in their own right. However, the most amazing supernatural element that The Witcher has ever introduced is an event called the Conjunction of the Spheres, which is basically what caused the entire world of The Witcher to become what it is in the Netflix adaptation, the video games, and the books. So, what caused the Conjunction of the Spheres?
Unfortunately, the exact cause of the Conjunction of the Spheres is unknown, but we do know that it happens unexpectedly yet periodically. It is possible that the Conjunction of the Spheres is a completely natural cosmic event that is caused by something that’s beyond the understanding of humans.
The Conjunction of the Spheres is one of the most important events in the history of The Witcher, as it is actually the reason why the entire Continent is currently what it is. Of course, the Conjunction of the Spheres is also an important part of the ongoing storyline of Netflix’s The Witcher adaptation. As such, it is important to know how and what caused it.
What Is The Conjunction Of The Spheres?
The entire storyline of The Witcher is one that is full of fantastic and supernatural elements that include some of the most prominent parts of what makes a fantasy series so good. In that regard, the series has the undying elements that you always see in a fantasy storyline. These include magic and monsters. But the thing about The Witcher is that there is an incredible cosmic event that is the very reason why the world even exists the way it does right now.
What we are talking about is the event called the Conjunction of the Spheres, which is one of the most important supernatural events that you can find in the storyline of The Witcher. However, what is the Conjunction of the Spheres?
In The Witcher, it is important to know that a multiverse exists. That means that there are other dimensions and worlds that are separate from one another. And we’re not talking about planets here but actual universes that exist in different dimensions that are normally impossible to access.
Of course, we know that the world of The Witcher takes place in a vast and rich land called the Continent. However, it is important to take note that the Continent wasn’t what it is right now because it used to be inhabited only by elves, dwarves, and gnomes. All these creatures were called “elders” due to the fact that they have been on the Continent longer than the humans have. And the event that caused humans to enter the Continent is the Conjunction of the Spheres.
In the past (1,200 years in the Netflix adaptation and 1,500 years in the books and video games), the Conjunction of the Spheres happened as it is a cataclysmic event that allows different dimensions and universes to collide with one another. This causes portals that connect one world to another to open. Basically, different gateways began opening to allow different creatures and races to cross their own dimensions to get to another dimension. That is exactly what the Conjunction of the Spheres is.
It is the very fact that the Conjunction of the Spheres took place that humans were able to leave their dying world to get to the Continent. Of course, the monsters also found a way to get from their own worlds to the Continent. As such, it was through the first Conjunction of the Spheres that the Continent became inhabited by humans and monsters.
But the humans eventually became the dominant species that ruled the food chain due to the very fact that they were more barbaric than the elder races that inhabited the Continent before the Conjunction of the Spheres. The humans had a propensity for violence that the elves and dwarves were unable to match. As such, they became the dominant settlers of the Continent after clashing with the elder races for years.
Of course, season 2 of The Witcher also allowed us to see how the elves struggled to actually reproduce. That means that the humans eventually outnumbered the elves shortly after moving from their dying world to get to the Continent during the Conjunction of the Spheres.
In that regard, without the Conjunction of the Spheres, the elves would have lived on the Continent in peace as there would be no humans and monsters to mess things up for them. But it was the very fact that the Conjunction happened that the humans were able to find a way to continue to survive. Of course, the Conjunction is also the reason why the Wild Hunt, who are races with the ability to move from one dimension to another, got trapped in a different world.
What Caused The Conjunction Of The Spheres?
Of course, the Conjunction of the Spheres is incredibly important to the history of the Continent because of how it changed the complexity of the world of The Witcher. But what exactly caused the Conjunction of the Spheres?
At this point, what caused the Conjunction of the Spheres is actually a mystery because there is no exact account of the true reason behind this cataclysmic event. There is a good reason to believe that it is simply a natural phenomenon that occurs for no reason other than the fact that it just simply happens. Of course, the scholars of the world of The Witcher don’t have the technology or the resources that would allow them to fully understand what causes this event.
But there is a good reason to believe that the Conjunction of the Spheres is also an event that is caused by a higher power and by someone who shares a portion of their power with one of the humans that exist in The Witcher. And we are talking about Ciri, who has the power of the Elder Blood in her.
We know for a fact that there is a connection between the Conjunction of the Spheres and Ciri’s powers, as that was something that we saw in season 2. During the events of season 2, the monoliths that we saw throughout the Continent were actually impact points that were left by the first Conjunction of the Spheres. So, when Ciri used her powers to topple a monolith, she caused different monsters to appear on the Continent as she opened up small portals from those worlds. That is why there were mysterious monsters that appeared during the events of season 2.
When Geralt and Istredd investigated the monolith that Ciri toppled when she escaped Cintra, they found that there were no monsters or corpses in that area, as it was clear that the monoliths were not areas where monsters lived. Instead, Istredd went on to theorize that these impact points were actually conduits that opened portals from one world to another due to the effects of the first Conjunction of the Spheres.
As such, Ciri’s powers are the ones that allow the portals to open. This was proven when Voleth Meir took over her body and summoned a monolith in Kaer Morhen. The monolith opened a gateway that allowed monsters to enter the stronghold of the Witchers. As such, it is clear that her powers are connected to the monoliths.
We also saw during the final episode that Ciri was able to actually teleport herself, Geralt, and Yen to another dimension without the use of a monolith. That means that she has powers that are connected to the Conjunction of the Spheres. It is even possible that her powers could be responsible for the Conjunction of the Spheres but on a smaller scale.
That is why Ciri is so important in the events of The Witcher, as her powers can cause a Conjunction that is on a smaller scale. Voleth Meir wanted her body so that she could return to the dimension where she came from. Of course, the Wild Hunt, who are set to have an important role in the coming season of The Witcher, wanted Ciri’s powers due to the fact that they were trapped in a different dimension during the first Conjunction of the Spheres.
So, while we don’t know what caused the Conjunction of the Spheres, it is possible that this is a cosmic event that was caused by a higher power. And Ciri must have a portion of the power that this higher being possesses because she has the ability to trigger smaller Conjunctions that allow her and other people to move from one dimension to another.
