Mjolnir has been central to some of the MCU’s most memorable moments. From Thor’s struggles with worthiness to Captain America’s epic moment in Avengers: Endgame, the hammer has been destroyed, replaced, inherited, and reclaimed throughout the franchise.

But even with all that history, What If…? season 3 has revealed something new about its true potential, shaking up what we thought we knew. The MCU has always kept Mjolnir’s abilities pretty straightforward. Odin enchanted it so only the ‘worthy’ could wield it, and whoever did would gain Thor’s powers: storm manipulation, flight, super strength, and more.

Over the years, we’ve seen it smash enemies, summon lightning, and even heal Thor’s body. Marvel even confirmed it could open portals and track people, though it wasn’t shown doing all of this in the movies. Still, nothing hinted at the massive magical power What If…? now shows.

In What If…? season 3, we see Storm wielding Mjolnir as part of Captain Carter’s Guardians of the Multiverse. Unlike Thor, she taps into its magic to cast a powerful spell. Using an incantation, she calls on the collective power of Asgard’s All-Fathers and All-Mothers to break into the Fifth Dimension.

This feat changes what we thought about Mjolnir, suggesting it can amplify spells and serve as a magical conduit if wielded correctly. This isn’t something we’ve seen Thor do before. While Odin and Loki are skilled in magic, Thor has always been a warrior who uses magical tools, so not a sorcerer.

That’s what makes Storm’s use of Mjolnir so interesting. Her connection to both her mutant powers and magical heritage allows her to unlock potential in the hammer that Thor hasn’t explored.

With the MCU gearing up for multiversal chaos in Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, this twist could change everything. Thor might have the chance to tap into these hidden powers, opening up new possibilities for his character. For now, What If…? season 3 gives us a glimpse of what Mjolnir—and Thor—could truly be capable of.
