Netflix’s Enola Holmes 2 continued the storyline of the widely successful Enola Holmes movie that was released in 2020. Of course, while the movie itself is fiction, it does follow a storyline that is related to real-life events that happened a long time ago, as it tackled the Matchgirls’ Strike of the 19th century. It isn’t necessarily historically accurate, but there are a lot of things that can be interesting about the storyline. So, when and where does Enola Holmes 2 take place?
Enola Holmes 2 takes place roughly a year after the events of the first movie, which took place in 1884. That means that the sequel took place in 1885. The movie likely takes place in London, England, because that was where the Matchgirls’ Strike happened near the end of the 19th century.
Of course, the thing about this movie is that it shouldn’t be taken as a historical film but only as a film that includes historical events. In that regard, it was able to put a twist on the Matchgirls’ Strike of London by adding Enola Holmes and her brother, Sherlock, into the mix. So, with that said, let’s look at what we know about Enola Holmes 2.
When Does Enola Holmes 2 Take Place?
After two years of waiting, Enola Holmes 2 arrived on Netflix to deliver the much-awaited sequel to the successful Enola Holmes movie that was released in 2020. Of course, the movie continued the story of Enola Holmes, who was introduced as an aspiring detective that wanted to follow in the footsteps of her incredibly successful detective brother, Sherlock. So, in that regard, the sequel continues her story as a young detective on the rise.
Of course, the thing about Enola Holmes 2 is that it only followed up the storyline of the first movie, which we know took place in 1884 and had a different storyline that sought to establish Enola as a character. In that regard, when does Enola Holmes 2 take place?
During the start of Enola Holmes 2, we were made to see that she did indeed try to continue her rising detective career by opening her own detective agency. However, things didn’t work out the way she wanted them to because of the fact that her detective agency wasn’t quite successful. There were reasons why her business didn’t succeed, as people didn’t trust a girl with their cases and because she was far too young to be a detective. And there was the fact that she was still living in her brother’s shadow.
In that regard, it is possible that the movie takes place about a year after the events of the first movie, and that means that it could be set in 1885. However, there are things that we need to discuss to clarify when this event actually happened as far as its inclusion of historical events is concerned.
At the start, Enola was able to get a case just when she was about to close her agency as a young girl came looking for her to seek her help regarding her missing sister. In that regard, she was able to get herself involved in an entire situation that was not only about a missing girl but also about an entire scheme of corruption between a matchstick company and a public official. And without spoiling too much, we get to the point where the movie culminates in an event called the Matchgirls’ Strike.
The Matchgirls’ Strike was a historical movement wherein young women and teenage girls instituted a strike against their employer, which was the Bryant & May match factory. And the reasons were related to the fact that they were working under bad conditions that were detrimental to their health.
This event happened in 1888, and that means that it occurred near the end of the 19th century when the world was still just in the middle of an industrial rise. As such, there is a discrepancy between the setting of Enola Holmes 2 and the Matchgirls’ Strike, as Enola Holmes 2 likely took place in 1885, while the strike happened in 1888. There is a three-year discrepancy between the movie and the actual setting of the historical event.
Where Does Enola Holmes 2 Take Place?
Enola Holmes 2 continues the storyline of the first movie, and that means that it is also set in the same location. As mentioned, the movie began with Enola trying to establish herself as a rising detective with her own agency. She tried to establish herself in the industrial city of London, England, as this was also the setting of the first movie.
So, instead of coming home after traveling to London in the first movie, Enola decided to stay in the big city in the hopes of establishing herself as a detective. The good part was that, as young as she was, her older brother Sherlock was also in the city and was the best detective in the entire country. But instead of staying in Baker Street, which is a place that Sherlock was often associated with in all of the different versions of the character, Enola decided to live in her own place.
There is also the fact that Enola Holmes 2 talks about the events that led to the Matchgirls’ Strike of 1888. This historical event happened in Bow, London, and that means the setting of the events of Enola Holmes 2 match (pun intended) the setting of the events of the Matchgirls’ Strike. There is also the fact that Sherlock himself was known to have established his claim to fame in London in the books, and that means that Enola would likely also try to establish her claim to fame in the same city.
