Where & When Is the Willow TV Show Set & How Is It Connected with the Movie?

An underrated gem that was released in the 1980s was Willow, which is set to have a TV show adaptation that will be released on Disney+ because of the fact that Willow was always a Lucasfilm property. In that regard, there might be a lot of things that people are wondering about in relation to the upcoming Willow series. Specifically, people might be wondering where and when it is set. So, where and when is the TV series set, and how does it relate to the movie?

The Willow TV series is set in the same unnamed world where the movie was set in. This series is also a direct sequel to the movie that was released in 1988. That means that the series takes place right after the events of the movie. It is likely that the series is set several years after the original Willow movie.

While it may be an underrated gem, Willow was a good part of the childhood years of a lot of different people, and that is why the nostalgia is strong in this upcoming series. At this point, however, we don’t know a lot of things about the upcoming Willow series. So, that said, let’s first look at where and when the series is set.

Where Is The Willow Series Set?

Back in the 80s, when Lucasfilm was still living off the high of the massively successful Star Wars trilogy, the studio decided to work on an entirely different project that wasn’t related to Star Wars. That was when George Lucas decided to work on a dark fantasy storyline that takes on a more medieval and magical approach than Star Wars. Yes, we are talking about the Willow movie, which was released back in 1988.

Willow is a film that stars the titular character named Willow, who worked as a simple farmer in a small village but ended up getting himself caught up in a larger adventure that is seemingly more than what his size would suggest he was capable of. As such, it had a lot of the different elements that make a good fantasy storyline memorable, and that’s the very reason why Willow is a big part of the childhood years of those who grew up in the 80s.

While the movie was indeed successful, it did not have the same kind of success that the Star Wars trilogy enjoyed, and Willow never had a sequel movie that diehard fans wanted. But the good thing is that Disney, which now owns Lucasfilm, has decided to cash in on the nostalgia by delivering a Willow series that is set to be released on Disney+.

The Willow TV series is likely to take place in the same fantasy world that the original Willow movie was set in. However, the thing is that the world where the Willow movie was set was never really given a name (although it is often referred to as the Mother World). That means that all we know is that the entire Willow series is going to be set in the same Mother World where magic exists and where the original movie took place. And it is possible that the same locations that we saw in the original Willow movie will still be featured in this one.

When Is The Willow Series Set?

Similar to the fact that the world of the original Willow movie was never named, we also know that there really wasn’t really any mention of when the original movie took place. That means that the movie most likely didn’t use time as a major factor in the events of the film. And that is also likely the same case in the Willow series.

The only thing that we know about the Willow series is that it takes place years after the events of the film. The fact that it stars Warwick Davis as the original character more than 30 years after the events of the movie means that Willow is now a lot older than he was back in his first appearance.

Of course, we already know, based on what has been revealed about the Willow series, that the storyline takes place years after the movie. However, we don’t know how long it has been in the in-universe time, even though it may have been more than 30 years since the movie was released. As such, it is more than possible that the Willow series will take place decades after the movie, considering that Warwick Davis is already much older than he was in his first appearance as the titular Willow character.

How Does The Willow Series Connect With The Movie?

It has been a very long time since the Willow movie was released, and those who grew up in the 80s wished for a sequel to be made. There were plans to make Willow 2, but such plans were scrapped before they could even become a reality. Warwick Davis himself admitted that people have been asking him whether there were plans for a sequel.

“So many fans have asked me over the years if Willow will make a return, and now I’m thrilled to tell them that he will indeed,” said Davis. “Many have told me they grew up with ‘Willow’ and that the film has influenced how they view heroism in our own world. If Willow Ufgood can represent the heroic potential in all of us, then he is a character I am extremely honored to reprise.”

The good thing is that Warwick Davis is indeed reprising his role in the Willow series because of the fact that he is still playing the titular character. That means that the Willow series is a direct sequel to the movie and is likely to take place years after the events of the movie.

However, considering that this is a new generation, the Willow series will follow the storylines of entirely new characters. Of course, Willow is still the titular character of the series, but we already know that new characters will be introduced alongside characters that will be reprising their roles. As such, everything about this series will be connected to the movie, considering that it is a direct sequel.
