After eight exciting episodes, The Penguin ended on November 10, 2024. The spin-off series that portrayed the Penguin’s rise and the elimination of his enemies was critically acclaimed, and both the fans and critics loved it, showing that Matt Reeves is doing a great job with DC’s most popular superhero.

And while fans are now waiting for the second movie, which will continue where The Penguin left off, everyone is wondering one thing – where was Jim Gordon?

Okay, we know why Batman wasn’t in the series, but the GCPD played an important role in the series, and with the scope of the crime seen in the eight episodes, you can’t help but wonder why Gordon wasn’t there.

Well, in case you were wondering about it, we actually have an answer for you, seeing how INVERSE had a brief talk with Jeffrey Wright, the actor portraying Gordon in the film. Wright revealed the truth behind Gordon’s absence, but also some information about the future.

If you’ve seen the series, you know that The Penguin was a proper crime drama, with the crimes committed ranging from robbery through drug trafficking to outright murder (and even mass murder).

So, as you can guess, it was a true crisis for Gotham, and the GCPD was really active in the series, although the police forces were not in focus as far as the series was concerned.

For example, we know that Con O’Neill reprised his role as GCPD Chief Mackenzie Bock from the movie, showing that the higher-ups from the GCPD were, indeed, involved in the case.

But with the scale of the case, as well as the people involved – the GCPD absolutely knew what the presence of both the Falcone and Maroni families meant, especially after what happened in The Batman – it isn’t logical that Gordon was not present.

And while we don’t really know what Gordon was doing during the series, Jeffrey Wright revealed why he wasn’t back, as well as whether he would appear in a later season of the series, if such a thing ever happens:

There was no talk of my being in this first season. (…) Who knows? We’ll see what happens down the line, but I’m juggling enough balls as it is.

As you can see, Wright is open to returning to the series, but we don’t know if that is going to happen.

As things stand now, The Penguin is not a proper candidate for a second season, not because it was bad, but because it was so good, and no one can see a proper continuation of this storyline that would be better or even as good as the original.

On the other hand, Wright will be reprising his role in Reeves’ sequels, and the actor has expressed his enthusiasm about his return to the role in the upcoming sequel:

I’m excited about getting back there, but you probably know as much as I know. I haven’t read anything. I haven’t talked to Matt for a while. He’s been off doing his thing, I’ve been off doing mine. But I look forward to getting back there. There’s a lot to explore… I think the vision that [Reeves] has of Gotham is a really wonderful one, really rich and kind of grimy in the best way.
