As The Book of Boba Fett continues on with more episodes released every week, more and more characters are set to be introduced to the narrative. This brings us to some of the characters that you may or may not have heard of before, including Garsa Fwip, who might eventually get more of her screen time in the series. But who is Garsa Fwip in The Book of Boba Fett? And who plays her?
Madam Garsa Fwip is Twi’lek who owns a cantina called The Sanctuary. It is presumed that she used to pay tribute to Jabba the Hutt and is now doing the same to Boba Fett, to whom she handed out a share of her profits. Garsa Fwip is played by Jennifer Beals, who had her big break in Flashdance in the 80s.
The thing about The Book of Boba Fett is that it seeks to introduce characters that are almost entirely new to the entire Star Wars universe because this franchise is vast enough such that there are plenty of stories and characters interesting enough to add to the narrative. That said, Garsa Fwip seems to be one of those characters regardless of how important her role will be in this series.
Who Is Madam Garsa Fwip In The Book Of Boba Fett?
The Book of Boba Fett is Disney’s newest Star Wars spin-off series following the massive success and positive critical reception of The Mandalorian. As the title suggests, The Book of Boba Fett follows the legendary bounty hunter named Boba Fett after he recovered his armor from Din Djarin in his appearance in The Mandalorian. The series looks to explore Fett’s past and future as he is now living an entirely different life.
Upon recovering his armor in The Mandalorian, Boba Fett promptly kills Bib Fortuna, who took over Jabba the Hutt’s leadership as a crime lord in Tatooine. Then, in the opening scenes of The Book of Boba Fett, we come to understand that Boba Fett has now taken over the position that Jabba once held and is now looking to earn the servitude of some of the names that once served the Hutts.
However, instead of trying to rule with an iron fist by using fear as the main catalyst of his leadership, Boba Fett is now looking to become a more benevolent and approachable leader by trying to earn respect the right way. This includes sparing the life of the two Gamorrean guards that were once loyal to Jabba Fett and walking around Tatooine the old-fashion way.
Speaking of walking around, as Boba Fett and his right-hand Fennec Shand walk around Tatooine, they enter a cantina and meet up with a Twi’lek woman named Madam Garsa Fwip, who didn’t recognize the bounty hunter at first because of their less-extravagant approach. But who is Madam Gras Fwip?
As mentioned, Garsa Fwip is a Twi’lek woman and is seemingly the proprietor of a cantina based in Tatooine. The cantina is called The Sanctuary and is not simply a cantina because you see people gambling in it. Garsa Fwip seems to be the one running the place, but this cantina used to be under the ownership of Jabba the Hutt, to who the Madam used to pay tributes.
However, upon realizing that Boba Fett had now risen up to take Jabba’s place as the new crime lord of the vicinity, Garsa Fwip was quick to congratulate the legendary bounty hunter, who is without his helmet in the scene because two attendants “cleaned” his and Fennec’s helmet prior to the meeting with The Sanctuary’s proprietor.
As Boba and Fennec recover their helmets following their meeting with Madam Garsa Fwip, they see that their helmets are full of money, and that means that they were paid some of the shares of The Sanctuary. This could mean that Fwip was probably telling that Boba is now the new “owner” of the establishment, similar to how Jabba was in the past. Or it could also mean that she is paying tribute to the new crime boss in an attempt to get to his good side.
Whatever the case may be, the introduction of Madam Garsa Fwip and The Sanctuary doesn’t seem to be a mere minor scene in The Book of Boba Fett. This establishment could very well end up becoming one of Fett’s main sources of income. Meanwhile, we could also end up seeing Garsa Fwip playing a bigger role in the future as quite possibly one of Boba Fett’s biggest allies in his rise to power.
Who Plays Garsa Fwip In The Book Of Boba Fett?
Similar to what Disney has been doing when it comes to the casting choices in their Star Wars shows on Disney+, The Book of Boba Fett chose an actress that may not be the most well-known but is still perfect for the role of Garsa Fwip. Still, she is quite familiar to some of you.
The Madam of The Sanctuary is played by Jennifer Beals, who is an internationally renowned actress and had some success as a film and television actress. You may know her from Flashdance or The Book of Eli.
Why Does Garsa Fwip Feel Familiar?
As mentioned, some of you may or may not be familiar with Jennifer Beals, who plays Garsa Fwip in The Book of Boba Fett. That’s because Beals had a pretty popular film back in the 80s when she got her big break as an actress.
The 80s is not short on films that revolve around dancing, which used to be one of the biggest ways for people to socialize during that decade. Flashdance is one of the dance movies that were pretty popular back in the 80s. And the one playing Alex Owens, the star of the movie, is none other than Jennifer Beals.
Other than Flashdance, Jennifer Beals also performed really well in the groundbreaking series The L Word, which ran for six seasons. She plays a character named Bette Porter in a series that actually focuses on queer women during a time when shows and movies about lesbians were not quite that prominent yet.
