Enola Holmes 2 continued the intriguing and adventurous storyline that had already been established in the first movie. Of course, the movie brought back almost all of the main characters that made the first film so successful. But while we saw the Holmes family once more in this movie, it was clear that there was one missing person in the form of Mycroft, who was played by Sam Claflin in the first film. So, why isn’t Sam Claflin in Enola Holmes 2?
Sam Claflin wasn’t in Enola Holmes 2 because of the fact that he had a very busy schedule that made it difficult for the director to make room for him. As such, they proceeded to write Mycroft Holmes out of Enola Holmes 2. However, they still hope to bring Sam Claflin back for a possible third movie.
The Enola Holmes movies on Netflix have become quite successful, especially because of how well the actors portrayed their roles and how the star power of the actors was good enough to bring a lot of viewers in. Still, it was a shame not to have Sam Claflin in the sequel. Of course, we’re here to discuss why he wasn’t in the movie and whether or not he could return in the future.
Why Isn’t Sam Claflin In Enola Holmes 2?
The release of Enola Holmes on Netflix back in 2020 allowed a new type of adaptation to Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic Sherlock Holmes stories to get its very own adaptation, as we saw how Enola, who was written by author Nancy Springer as the youngest sister of Sherlock Holmes in the books, to see the light of day on our TV screens. Of course, because of how widely successful the first movie was, the franchise rightfully earned itself a second installment.
It was in the first movie, of course, that we were introduced to the Holmes family that focused so much on Enola’s storyline, even though we all know that she has brothers that are much more successful and popular. While we know that Sherlock is the most popular in the Holmes family, we also know that Mycroft, the eldest sibling, is also quite successful in his line of work as a government official. And we got to see how well Sam Claflin portrayed Mycroft in the character’s debut in the first movie.
While we did see a lot of the characters from the first movie returning in Enola Holmes 2, it was clear that Sam Claflin’s Mycroft Holmes wasn’t in the movie. So, why isn’t Sam Claflin in Enola Holmes 2? Well, this was answered by Harry Bradbeer, the director of the movie, in a Collider interview. In that interview, he said:
“Well, it was Sam’s schedule that became very clear, so Sam was not going to be in it… We were very sorry that Sam couldn’t be in this one. If there was a future one, we would love to have him back. But that was just the practicalities of life. That then meant, though, that we had to then concentrate on Sherlock, which has some advantages in the sense and that it becomes a sharp pencil if you like. You’re just having to work with that particular relationship. It had to be about Sherlock and Enola and coming together. So, I guess there is some blessings in having less pieces because you can do more with what you have.”
So, as you can see, it was clear that they wanted Sam Claflin to return in Enola Holmes 2 so that all of the members of the Holmes family get to appear on the screen once more after the success of the first movie. The only problem was that Sam’s schedule was so full that it made it difficult for the director to reconcile the filming of the movie with whatever time the actor could provide. As such, they had to move on with the movie without Sam Claflin’s Mycroft.
Because Mycroft wasn’t around in the movie, the director had to move on by focusing more on the relationship between Enola and Sherlock. We know that both Sherlock and Mycroft care about their sister, but it was only in Enola Holmes 2 that the world-famous detective actually started to see his sister’s potential as a detective. In fact, they worked on their interrelated cases together as equals, as that was how Sherlock was able to grow closer to Enola while understanding how good of a detective she could be.
As such, Sam Claflin’s absence in the movie allowed Enola Holmes 2 to focus more on the remaining Holmes siblings and their relationship with one another. It is unlikely that this kind of dynamic between Enola and Sherlock would have been possible had Mycroft been around, as this would mean that the movie would have had to divide Enola’s time between her two brothers.
Will Sam Claflin Return In Enola Holmes 3?
As mentioned, Bradbeer and the other people working on the Enola Holmes movies have no plans of completely writing Sam Claflin’s Mycroft Holmes out of the picture. In fact, he said that they want to bring him back in the future, especially if another movie were to be approved by Netflix. As such, there is a really good chance that Claflin will return in Enola Holmes 3 as long as the movie gets a green light and the actor’s schedule is open.
Of course, while Enola Holmes has always been about the titular character, Mycroft has had his own fair share of storylines in the books as well. And this can be seen in the graphic novel Enola Holmes: Mycroft’s Dangerous Game.
In that graphic novel, the author sought to bridge the gap between the two Enola Holmes movies as Enola now has to solve a case that involves rescuing her oldest brother. While we do know that this graphic novel is quite possibly set before Enola Holmes 2, we are quite sure that there is plenty of room for the directors to include Mycroft in the storyline in any of the future installments of the movie.
So, with that said, Sam Claflin is likely to return in the future as long as his schedule permits it. Of course, because Enola Holmes 2 focused on the relationship between Enola and Sherlock, it is likely that the third movie will focus on improving the relationship between Enola and her oldest brother, as Mycroft has always been a lot stricter than Sherlock due to his status as a government official. And it should be a good idea to see the dynamic between the two characters as they live totally different lives, whereas Enola and Sherlock have more things in common than the titular character has with Mycroft.
