Why Is the Daredevil Mask Yellow in She-Hulk?
Even though episode 5 of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law was more of a personal battle on the part of Jen Walters, we did see the series dropping the biggest tease yet. That’s because, in fashion designer Luke’s office, we saw a mask that appeared to belong to our favorite blind hero, Daredevil himself. But the thing that was striking about that mask is the fact that it carries a yellow color that we aren’t used to when it comes to Daredevil. So, why is the Daredevil mask in She-Hulk yellow?
The Daredevil mask in She-Hulk is yellow because Daredevil himself actually wore a yellow suit in the comics. In his origin story, Matt Murdock chose to wear a yellow and red suit to pay homage to his father, who used to wear a yellow and red robe as a boxer whenever he was on his way to the ring.
It was quite surprising to see that Daredevil was going to be teased in She-Hulk in such a simple yet very informative way. But what was even more surprising was the fact that the mask was yellow. This could mean that the MCU version of the character might be paying homage to his early roots when Daredevil used to wear yellow and red in comic books. Now, let’s look at what we know about the yellow-suited Daredevil.
Daredevil’s Yellow Suit Origins
There are plenty of street-level superheroes in the history of the Marvel Comics universe, as there is something special and quite close to heart when it comes to characters that are simpler in how they go about their business. One such character is Daredevil, who is the alter ego of the blind lawyer named Matt Murdock. Daredevil has always been one of the most popular street-level heroes in the history of Marvel Comics, as he is one of the most badass characters ever.
Of course, we all know that Daredevil is actually remembered for the all-red suit with the small devil horns sticking out of his head. But the thing is that Daredevil actually wore a different costume in one of the earlier versions of the character. And yes, the suit is a combination of yellow and black instead of the red costume that we are quite used to.
Before Matt Murdock became the vigilante hero named Daredevil, he used to have a boxer for a father. Jack Murdock used to be a dirty boxer that did things in an unconventional way so that he could win his matches and make some money.
However, in his final match, he tried to do things the right way in honor of his son. But this ended up costing him his life, as this was one of the most important moments in the young Matt Murdock’s life.
Back in the day, when Jack was still boxing, he used to come to the ring wearing a yellow and red robe. He also wore yellow trunks. This was something that was shown in the Marvel Netflix Daredevil series, as we saw Jack Murdock wearing this iconic robe.
Of course, when Daredevil was still starting out, we did see him wearing an all-black suit because he was yet to come up with the red suit that made him iconic. But there was a moment in the history of the character’s comic book storyline when he actually wore a yellow and black suit. Sometimes, the suit was actually yellow and red.
The reason why Matt Murdock chose to wear that color combination for his suit was related to the fact that his father, of course, used the same color combination for his robes and in-ring gear. In a sense, this choice boiled down to the fact that Daredevil wanted to pay homage to his father, who was his biggest inspiration in life. By choosing a suit that primarily revolved around the yellow color scheme, he was able to honor his father’s name, who died trying to do the right thing.
Then again, we did see Daredevil donning the iconic all-red suit that has become synonymous with the character. In that regard, the yellow suit was more like a phase for the character as this was one of the most obscure moments in Matt Murdock’s life.
Why Is The Daredevil Mask Yellow In She-Hulk?
Episode 5 of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law was more of a personal journey for the character, who had to fight a court battle against Titania, who was suing her for the use of the She-Hulk name that she trademarked for her line of cosmetics. Of course, the episode also revolved around another for Jen Walters. And we are talking about the war against fashion.
As you probably already noticed, Jen Walters has struggled all season long to find a suit that could fit her both in her regular form and in her She-Hulk form. On top of that, everyone around her seemed to think that her fashion sense needed a lot of work. And that’s why Nikki, her best friend and paralegal, worked to find a way for her to get a suit that could fit her.
In her search for the perfect sit, Nikki found a secretive superhero fashion designer named Luke, who had an exclusive list of superhero clients. Nikki tricked Luke into thinking that She-Hulk was an Avenger so that they could get an appointment. At first, Luke was not sure about working with her but was ultimately convinced that working with a Hulk was going to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for him. That’s why Luke ended up tailoring a suit for Jen.
After winning her court battle, Jen had to go back to Luke for her suit. She was trying the suit on when Luke found a box containing a mask. Luke, after finding the box open, reminded his assistant about the importance of client confidentiality. Nevertheless, what was striking was the fact that the mask resembled Daredevil’s own mask but was yellow.
Of course, the reason why the mask is yellow could be related to the comic book origins of the yellow Daredevil suit. We know for a fact that Matt Murdock will appear as Daredevil in She-Hulk but what we also knew based on some leaks was that the character was going to wear a yellow and red suit.
As such, this suit’s color could be related to the comic book origin story surrounding Daredevil’s yellow suit. Yes, we are talking about his father’s yellow and red robe. As such, it is the possibility that Daredevil is paying homage to his father that could be the reason behind the yellow mask that we saw in episode 5 of She-Hulk and the yellow and red suit that we’ve seen in the leaks.
Of course, this is going to be a huge change from the red suit that we’ve seen in season 3 of the Netflix Daredevil series. We aren’t exactly sure whether or not the Netflix series is canon but what we do know is that Charlie Cox is still Matt Murdock. But there is a good chance that She-Hulk will explain why Murdock has chosen to ditch the red suit he wore in New York for the yellow and red suit he is eventually going to wear in LA.
