Will Ferrell Shares His Opinion on Why Transphobia Exists: “I think we fear what we don’t know”
As far as comedy is concerned, Will Ferrell is definitely one of the most recognizable names in Hollywood today. And while not everyone likes his brand of humor, he has had some memorable roles and is generally considered to be one of the good guys, as far as Hollywood stars are concerned.
Currently, Ferrell is promoting his new documentary, Will & Harper, which is going to be released today, on September 27, 2024 on Netflix. The documentary chronicles the friendship between Ferrell and fellow comedian Harper Steele, as they embark on a a 17-day road trip across the United States.
Steele is a trans person, and in light of that fact, Will Ferrell discussed the issue of transgender people in today’s society, as well as the issue of transphobia, concluding that trans people don’t pose a threat to anyone. In the paragraphs below, we are going to present you with the most interesting parts of his interview given to the Independent.
When Steele admitted to Ferrell that she was trans, she wanted only one thing from him: “I just ask you as my friend to stand up for me. Do your best to, if I’m misgendered, just speak up on my behalf, that’s all I ask.” Building on that, Will Ferrell asked about trans people and the issue of transphobia in today’s society, and his response contains some powerful words:
We met a lot of people who were just… Who were just… ‘You do you – you’re not a threat.’ There is hatred out there. It’s very real and it’s very unsafe for trans people in certain situations. But I don’t know why trans people are meant to be threatening to me as a cis male.
I don’t know why Harper is threatening to me. It’s so strange to me, because Harper is finally… her. She’s finally who she was always meant to be. Whether or not you can ultimately wrap your head around that, why would you care if somebody’s happy? Why is that threatening to you? If the trans community is a threat to you, I think it stems from not being confident or safe with yourself.”
And we can only agree. These are, indeed, some powerful words coming from the actor, and the documentary that is premiering today will show a more intimate side to their friendship, which will, hopefully, change some minds and show people that differences are not something that we have to shun and destroy, but rather embrace and accept. If we were all the same, the world would be a very dull place indeed.
