It’s been 20 years since Blizzard Entertainment expanded its Warcraft series with World of Warcraft (WoW), reshaping gaming history. The game launched with overwhelmed servers as eager players rushed in, creating a demand for massive support teams. Two decades later, its impact on gaming and culture remains undeniable.

Holly Longdale, the executive producer of World of Warcraft, reflects on how the game isn’t just an activity—it’s a lifestyle. ‘It’s about playing with friends, connecting with guilds, and making time to dive into Azeroth,’ she shared. Her team focuses on keeping the game welcoming and fresh for both veterans and new players.

Since its launch, WoW has attracted over 240 million players through its 10 expansions and Classic versions. To celebrate the 20th anniversary, Blizzard prepared special events, both in the game and in real life, under the banner of the Worldsoul Saga. This effort includes everything from a Warcraft-themed college football rebranding to appearances in other games like Candy Crush.

Blizzard’s president, Johanna Faries, highlighted the strong connection between the community and the developers. She called the anniversary a chance to honor the game’s ability to build lifelong friendships and adventures.

Microsoft, which now owns Blizzard, has embraced WoW’s legacy. Xbox’s gaming head, Matt Booty, praised the franchise’s growth and hinted at more ambitious plans, including potential adaptations for TV or film.

Despite past struggles, such as the lukewarm reception of the 2016 Warcraft movie, optimism remains high.

As Blizzard charts a bold future for WoW, Longdale emphasizes creating a healthy and inclusive environment. Women now hold key leadership roles, reflecting positive changes in the company’s culture. With fresh content and evolving strategies, WoW’s journey is far from over.
