Yellowjackets Season 2: Release Date, Trailer, Plot, Cast, And More

Yellowjackets is a series that kind of flew under the radar because it didn’t have the hype that some of the other series have but is actually very good to the point that it has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This meant that it was bound to be renewed for another season, as we are set for more horror and craziness in this amazing series.

As Showtime renewed Yellowjackets for a second season, fans of the show are getting excited about what can come in the second season, as season 1 is about to end. As such, we are here to talk about what we know about season 2 and when it could possibly arrive. 

Yellowjackets Season 2 Release Date

Showtime’s Yellowjackets series took the world by storm because of how surprisingly good the show is, despite the fact that it didn’t have the kind of hype that most other shows usually come with before their release. That said, Yellowjackets is set to become one of the best shows on Showtime in recent years and was said to have doubled the number of subscribers on Showtime’s standalone streaming service.

The basic premise of season 1 of Yellowjackets revolves around a female high school soccer team that was on its way to a championship game in 1996 until the plane crashed in the middle of the wilderness. Trying desperately to survive, they resort to cannibalism and all sorts of craziness. And we even see the story jumping between 1996 and 2021 to show us the lives of those who survived the plane crash.

With its amazing premise and great flow, Yellowjackets was able to garner a lot of positive responses from critics, all while pulling viewers from all over the country regularly. This means that Showtime had no choice but to renew it for a second season back when the series was still at the halfway point of its first 10-episode season.

As Yellowjackets has been renewed for a second season, people are wondering when they could expect it to arrive, considering that season 1 is still just about to end. So, when will season 2 of Yellowjackets be released?

Considering that season 1 is yet to end and that season 2 had just been renewed, there are no certainties regarding the release date for the second season. However, as of this writing, Showtime president Gary Levine said that the writers for the show are set to start working on the season 2 episodes as early as January 2022. That means that it would be possible for us to see the release of the second season in 2022.

“We have not heard the pitch for season two, the writers room has not even come together yet, they are going to come together in January,” Levine said. “I’m sure Ashley, Bart, and Jonathan have some loose ideas, but they hadn’t fleshed out their ideas, and they certainly haven’t conveyed them to us.”

We can also look at season 1 as an indication of the possible release date of season 2. The first season began filming in June of 2021 and was released on November 14 of the same year, although not all episodes were done as far as editing was concerned. So, based on the news regarding the timing of the renewal of the series, there is a good possibility that we may end up seeing season 2 following the same schedule as season 1.

In that regard, as the writers work on the episodes as early as January of 2022, we may very well see season 2 filming as early as June of 2022 as well. So, based on that scheduling, it is possible for season 2 to release in November of 2022, which follows the same release date window as season 1.

However, those are merely speculations because anything can still happen from now until the end of the year. Most industries in 2021 started recovering from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and that made it easier for the television and movie industry to start filming. However, considering that there is still a possibility for some industries to slow down due to the effects of the new COVID-19 strains, it won’t be impossible for the television and film industry to see some obstacles along the way. 

Still, we are quite optimistic about the possibility that season 2 will come right around November of 2022.

Given the fact that we are still in season 1, there is still no trailer for season 2. Of course, you should also know that trailers usually come right in the middle of or after filming. As such, we may have to wait until season 2 starts filming before we can expect a trailer to come soon enough. 

Yellowjackets Season 2 Plot

Like many other different shows, the plot for the next season will revolve around the final events of the last season. This means that it is too early in the day for Yellowjackets season 2 to have a plot, considering that season 1 is yet to have its finale. Everything about the next season will have to rely on what will happen in the season 1 finale because season 2 will most probably take off from the events of the first season’s final episode.

There are still things left unanswered in season 1, and some of those questions might get answered in the season finale. From there, season 2 will look to build from what happened in the finale, such as exploring the lives of those who survived in the first season, as well as the introduction of new characters that may play important roles in both of the timelines.

“I do know that there will be some surprises in terms of the characters,” Gary Levine said. “There are still lots of questions about who survived, what happened out there. There will be some real surprises in terms of that, and I think some characters you may not even have met yet.” 

Based on what Levine said, there is a chance that we are in for a surprise in season 2, especially with the season 1 finale looming over our heads. Of course, we may be able to expect the surprises to rely heavily on the ending of season 1, which is sure to be a cliffhanger, just like how most finales are. Then again, the cliffhanger is the best part of a finale because it only makes us more excited for what is to come in the next season.

Yellowjackets Season 2 Cast

One of the things that made Season 1 of Yellowjackets so successful is its star-studded cast of veteran actresses, who played the adult versions of the characters. Names such as Christina Ricci, Melanie Lynskey, Juliette Lewis, and Tawny Cypress portray the surviving characters of the 1996 events.

Meanwhile, the 1996 teenage versions of those characters are portrayed by Sophie Nélisse, Sophie Thatcher, Sammi Hanratty, and Jasmin Savoy Brown. Of course, Ella Purnell, who plays team captain Jackie, is also one of the best stars of the series.

Then again, it is tough to expect all of those names to return for season 2, given the fact that the events of the first season are yet to be concluded. We are not sure whether or not some of the characters will die in the season 1 finale.

However, assuming that all of the characters survive the final episode of season 1, we can conclude that all of the surviving characters reprise their roles in season 2 unless there are sudden recasts in the middle of filming.

The cast details are yet to be confirmed for season 2 because the writers are still working. Filming is yet to start, and that means that the entire team still has a few months to finalize the cast that will be returning for season 2. If all things go right for all of the characters in the season finale, it is tough to contend against the possibility that we may be seeing all of them returning in the next season, regardless of how the writers decide the plot for the next season.

Of course, there is also a chance that other characters will be introduced to the series, depending on how the flow of the next season goes. That means that we might be seeing more names entering the series as cast members. Yet, that all remains to be seen because there is no news regarding the cast members and the plot for season 2, as the season 1 finale still looms over our head.

Will There Be Yellowjackets Season 3

Right now, there is no news regarding the possibility of a third season. It all depends on the success and plot of season 2, especially if it does well. However, regardless of how well season 2 performs, season 3 might not happen if the entire story concludes in two seasons. Nevertheless, we may have to wait until December of 2022 to know whether or not there will be a third season of Yellowjackets.
