Zack Snyder Reveals More Details About the R-Rated Cuts of 'Rebel Moon': "That shouldn't exist in the sci-fi movie at this scale."

Everyone who’s seen even one Zack Snyder movie knows that the filmmaker has a very specific and, in many ways, unique approach to his movies. Snyder is a visionary for some and a failure for others, but he doesn’t leave you indifferent, that is certain. And while we could discuss many of his projects in light of these comments, we are going to focus on his current project, the two-part sci-fi epic Rebel Moon, whose second part is going to be released soon.

Snyder has sat down to discuss the second version of his movie. Namely, we know that an R-rated Director’s Cut of both parts will be released by Netflix at a later date, while the two initial versions we’ve seen are reduced PG-13 versions. This is nothing unusual for Snyder, who has revealed that the R-rated cuts are truly brutal and very different from the original versions.

During an interview with UNILAD, Snyder discussed the upcoming R-rated cuts and revealed some interesting details about them. We found out that the level of violence is over the top and that some scenes were shot differently for the R-rated cut. Here are his exact words:

“The way I like to talk about it is that I think the two cuts that are coming are almost like alternative universe cuts more than an extended version. Like we call it the Director’s Cut. But they’re just like another movie.

We planned it while we were shooting, you know, we actually photographed the actors saying different dialogue. We knew that we were almost doing a foreign language version. You know, you actually knew as we were filming, like, okay, that’s for the R rated.

The tone of the film changes tremendously, because it’s more over the top in like, and purposely over the top [in terms of] the sex and violence. “It actually colors the movie, as it becomes more of a, I don’t wanna say like a parody, but it’s more self aware, you know, because the violence is so insane, that you’re now like, oh, like it, this is the thing that’s, that shouldn’t exist in the sci fi movie at this scale.”

This is certainly interesting to hear, especially in light of the fact that the first movie was not that well-received despite being an enormous investment for Netflix. Perhaps the R-rated cuts will prove to be more authentic and more organic, which might lead to people liking them more than the PG-13 versions.

Until they are released, we can confirm that the second movie, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, is going to be released on Netflix on April 19, 2024, which is just two days away. The duology featured an ensemble cast led by female star Sofia Boutella, who is accompanied by Djimon Hounsou, Ed Skrein, Michiel Huisman, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Charlie Hunnam, and Anthony Hopkins. It is expected that all these actors will reprise their roles in the second part. The screenplay was written by Snyder himself, alongside Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hatten.
