Zoe Saldaña Reacts to Karla Sofía Gascón’s Tweets Controvery: “It Makes Me Really Sad Because I Don’t Support It.”

Zoe Saldaña shared her feelings at a Q&A in London, addressing recent events surrounding her Emilia Pérez co-star Karla Sofía Gascón. Speaking with moderator Edith Bowman, she admitted she was still ‘processing’ everything and feeling ‘sad’ about the situation.
Gascón was supposed to attend the event alongside writer and director Jacques Audiard, as well as composers Camille and Clément Ducol. However, she was absent following the resurfacing of her past tweets, which contained offensive comments.
Saldaña made it clear she does not tolerate discrimination in any form. ‘It makes me really sad because I don’t support [it], and I don’t have any tolerance for any negative rhetoric towards people of any group,’ she said.
While acknowledging the controversy, she spoke about her own experience working on the film, emphasizing that the atmosphere on set was inclusive, collaborative, and focused on fairness across racial, cultural, and gender lines.
The actress expressed disappointment that the film’s message is being overshadowed. ‘It saddens me that we are having to face this setback right now,’ she admitted. However, she was grateful for the audience’s support of the film, calling its themes powerful and important, especially for marginalized communities.
Saldaña ended on a hopeful note, saying that despite the situation, she and her fellow cast and crew members remain committed to spreading a message of love, respect, and curiosity. ‘That’s all we can say right now. Thank you.’
The controversy surrounding Gascón’s past tweets has cast a shadow over Emilia Pérez, but Saldaña’s words reflect a desire to keep the focus on the film’s message rather than the scandal.
