Some TV characters steal your heart with their charm or grit, but others make you want to change the channel. Whether they’re whining, scheming, or just plain grating, these characters test your patience even in shows you love.
I’ve sat through enough episodes to know which ones drive me up the wall. Here’s my countdown of the 15 most annoying TV show characters, ranked from 15 to 1, each with their own brand of frustration and a nod to their show’s history.
15. Kim Bauer – ‘24’ (2001–2010)
Kim Bauer, played by Elisha Cuthbert, is Jack Bauer’s daughter, constantly stumbling into trouble. The show, created by Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran, pioneered real-time storytelling, following Jack’s intense counter-terrorism missions. Kim’s endless misadventures, from cougar traps to kidnappings, often pulled focus from the main action.
Her knack for bad decisions feels like a distraction from the high-stakes plot. I groan every time she lands in another ridiculous predicament, dragging Jack away from saving the world.
14. April Nardini – ‘Gilmore Girls’ (2000–2007)
April Nardini, portrayed by Vanessa Marano, is Luke’s surprise daughter in this Amy Sherman-Palladino creation about a quirky mother-daughter duo. Introduced late in the series, April’s arrival disrupted a beloved romance, and her precocious attitude didn’t help her case.
Her know-it-all vibe clashes with the show’s warm charm. I found her scenes jarring, like an unwelcome guest in Stars Hollow’s cozy world.
13. Mandy Hampton – ‘The West Wing’ (1999–2006)
Mandy Hampton, played by Moira Kelly, is a political consultant in Aaron Sorkin’s acclaimed drama about the White House. She appeared in the first season, but her abrasive style didn’t mesh with the sharp ensemble, leading to her quick exit.
Her smug attitude makes scenes feel like a lecture. I was relieved when the show moved on, letting more likable characters shine.
12. Ziggy Sobotka – ‘The Wire’ (2002–2008)
Ziggy Sobotka, portrayed by James Ransone, is a dockworker’s son in David Simon’s gritty crime drama. His reckless antics stand out in a show celebrated for its realistic portrayal of Baltimore’s underbelly, often feeling out of place among complex characters.
His immaturity grates against the show’s serious tone. I cringed watching him bumble through schemes, wishing he’d just grow up.
11. Priya Koothrappali – ‘The Big Bang Theory’ (2007–2019)
Priya Koothrappali, played by Aarti Mann, is Raj’s sister in Chuck Lorre’s hit sitcom about nerdy scientists. Introduced as Leonard’s love interest, her arc stirred up drama but lacked warmth, making her a divisive addition to the group.
Her cold demeanor and questionable choices annoy me every time. I fast-forward her scenes to get back to the core gang’s banter.
10. Craig Middlebrooks – ‘Parks and Recreation’ (2009–2015)
Craig Middlebrooks, portrayed by Billy Eichner, is a loud coworker in this beloved comedy created by Greg Daniels and Michael Schur. His over-the-top energy, while funny at times, often overwhelms the show’s charming ensemble.
His shouting matches disrupt Pawnee’s quirky vibe. I like the show’s heart, but Craig’s intensity makes me want to mute the TV.
9. Debbie Gallagher – ‘Shameless’ (2011–2021)
Debbie Gallagher, played by Emma Kenney, starts as a sweet kid in this John Wells drama about a dysfunctional Chicago family. As she grows, her manipulative choices, like tricking a boyfriend into pregnancy, sour her character.
Her selfish streak feels forced and off-putting. I rooted for the Gallaghers, but Debbie’s actions often made me wince.
8. Riley Finn – ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ (1997–2003)
Riley Finn, portrayed by MARC Blucas, is Buffy’s boyfriend in Joss Whedon’s iconic supernatural series. His military background and insecurity about Buffy’s strength make him a poor fit for the show’s vibrant cast.
His need to control situations clashes with Buffy’s independence. I cheered when his arc ended, freeing her for better storylines.
7. Ellis Boyd – ‘Smash’ (2012–2013)
Ellis Boyd, played by Jaime Cepero, is a scheming assistant in this musical drama about Broadway, created by Theresa Rebeck. His eavesdropping and backstabbing feel out of place in a show focused on creative passion.
His slimy antics make every scene a chore to watch. I wanted to root for the show’s stars, not this annoying lurker.
6. Andrea Harrison – ‘The Walking Dead’ (2010–2022)
Andrea Harrison, portrayed by Laurie Holden, is a survivor in Frank Darabont’s zombie apocalypse series. Her inconsistent choices and tendency to slow down the action with moral debates frustrated many viewers, unlike her stronger comic book counterpart.
Her preachy moments derail the show’s intensity. I found myself wishing she’d focus on surviving instead of lecturing.

Hannah Horvath, played by Lena Dunham, is the self-absorbed lead in Dunham’s HBO dramedy about young women in New York. Her entitled behavior and lack of growth over six seasons made her a lightning rod for criticism.
Her endless whining overshadows the show’s sharper moments. I often wished the focus shifted to her more compelling friends.

Rachel Berry, portrayed by Lea Michele, is the ambitious star of Ryan Murphy’s musical series about a high school glee club. Her talent is undeniable, but her need to always be the center of attention grates on everyone around her.
Her self-obsessed rants make team moments feel forced. I love the show’s music, but Rachel’s ego tests my patience.

Ross Geller, played by David Schwimmer, is the paleontologist in David Crane and Marta Kauffman’s iconic sitcom. His whiny demeanor and poor romantic choices, especially with Rachel, often overshadow his comedic moments.
His moping drags down the group’s fun energy. I enjoy the show’s humor, but Ross’s drama makes me roll my eyes.

Scrappy-Doo, Scooby’s nephew, was added to Hanna-Barbera’s mystery-solving cartoon to boost ratings. His hyperactive bravado and catchphrase ‘Puppy Power!’ clashed with the gang’s laid-back vibe, earning him widespread dislike.
His relentless energy feels like overkill in every episode. I prefer the classic Scooby gang without this yapping addition.

His smug cruelty makes every scene unbearable. I cheered when his reign ended, freeing Westeros from his toxic grip.
