18-Year-Old Mason Thames Smashes 30-Year-Old Jim Carrey Box Office Record
Mason Thames is making history in Hollywood. Over Halloween weekend, the 18-year-old actor passed three major global box office milestones, marking a record-breaking year for the young star.
Thames first gained attention with the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon, released on June 13.
He followed that hit with two October releases: Black Phone 2, Blumhouse’s sequel to their Joe Hill adaptation, and Regretting You, based on the novel by Colleen Hoover.
According to Variety, despite a slow weekend at the domestic box office—the lowest of the year, Thames still hit remarkable milestones. Black Phone 2 is expected to reach $104 million worldwide, making it one of only six horror films in 2025 to cross the $100 million mark. Meanwhile, Regretting You is projected to hit $50 million globally, becoming the third romance movie this year to reach that milestone.
When combined with the $636 million earned by How to Train Your Dragon, all of Thames’ 2025 films have collectively grossed $790 million worldwide. This means the actor himself has passed $775 million in global earnings this year alone, surpassing nearly every single movie released in 2025 except Jurassic World Rebirth, A Minecraft Movie, Lilo & Stitch, and Ne Zha 2. Over the course of his career, Thames’ films have earned $952.7 million, with 2025 accounting for almost 83% of that total.
This achievement is particularly noteworthy because it breaks a record previously held by Jim Carrey. In 1994, Carrey starred in three films, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber—that each reached #1 at the domestic box office in the same year. Thames’ rapid rise at just 18 years old now puts him in rare company.
It’s incredible to see a young actor like Mason Thames achieving this level of success so early in his career. His 2025 box office domination shows he’s more than just a rising star—he’s already setting records. What do you think about Thames’ achievements? Share your thoughts in the comments.
