One of this year’s biggest horror hits, 28 Years Later, is finally available to watch at home. Sony confirmed that the movie hit digital platforms on July 29. If you missed it in theaters, now’s your chance to see what all the buzz was about.

Directed by Danny Boyle, 28 Years Later continues the story that began with 28 Days Later back in 2002. The original movie helped redefine zombie horror, and this third entry brings the same energy, but with a darker and more emotional tone.

This one jumps decades ahead, showing what life looks like long after the rage virus first broke out. The story centers on a group of survivors trying to make it on a remote island while the rest of the world still suffers.

Boyle returned to direct, and he brought along a strong cast including Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, and newcomer Alfie Williams. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the movie holds an 88% critic score.

Originally released in theaters on June 20, 28 Years Later pulled in $150 million worldwide, making more than double its $60 million budget. Not bad for a sequel that was stuck in development hell for years.

The movie was written by Alex Garland and shot by cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle, both of whom worked on the original. Series producer Andrew Macdonald played a key role in making this new chapter happen. After years of delays over rights issues, he bought the rights to the first film and struck a deal with Sony to finally get the project off the ground.

Cillian Murphy, who starred in the first movie, also returned as an executive producer. And it looks like the story won’t end here. 28 Years Later was filmed back-to-back with a sequel called The Bone Temple, which is already set for release in January 2026.

If you buy the digital version of 28 Years Later, you’ll also get some bonus extras. These include behind-the-scenes clips like “Becoming the Infected,” “Days to Years,” and “Capturing the Chaos.” For collectors, the 4K Steelbook, Blu-ray, and DVD versions will drop on September 23.

For fans of post-apocalyptic horror or anyone who loved the original film, this one’s worth a watch. Whether you’re coming back for the story or just curious how it holds up after all these years, now’s the perfect time to catch it.
