2026 ‘Supergirl’ Budget Revealed — Can It Match Superman’s Success?
Supergirl will be the second movie in the new DC Universe. It’s directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira. Milly Alcock stars as Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl. She is joined by Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecham. In this story, Supergirl travels across the galaxy on a violent quest for revenge.
Forbes has revealed that the movie has a budget of $200 million. For comparison, the Superman movie reportedly had a net production budget of $225 million after incentives and tax breaks.
The Superman movie earned $354.2 million in the United States and Canada and $262.5 million in other countries, for a worldwide total of $616.7 million. According to Variety, Superman was expected to make about $125 million in theatrical profit.
The idea of a Supergirl movie started back in August 2018 as part of the DC Extended Universe. Supergirl first appeared in the 2023 movie The Flash, played by Sasha Calle. When James Gunn and Peter Safran became co-CEOs of DC Studios in October 2022, the plans for the standalone film changed.
In January 2023, a new Supergirl movie was officially announced. The film is based on the 2021–22 comic book miniseries Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. Ana Nogueira was hired to write the script by November 2023, and Milly Alcock was cast in January 2024.
Craig Gillespie joined as director in May 2024. Filming took place from January to May of this year at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden and locations in London and Scotland.
Supergirl is set to be released in the United States on June 26, 2026, and it will be part of the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
