‘Make My Day’ Ending Explained: Does the Planet Survive the Swarm?
Welcome to the Ending Explained for Make My Day, a new anime series coming to Netflix from the hand of Yasuo Ohtagaki. This new original story uses many tropes from other science fiction stories, but in the end, it manages to do a great job at creating its own aesthetic and also achieve some sense of uniqueness. It tells the story of a young prison guard named Jim, who gets caught in a catastrophe when an ancient alien species wake up from slumber and get ready to take back their planet from the hands of a greedy mining company.
The series could be defined as a mix between Aliens and The Thing, so if you liked any of those stories, this would be right up your alley. The characters are very well drawn and function well in the story. The pacing is also fantastic; each scene moves the plot forward or develops the characters. However, the use of CGI animation brings things down thanks and makes each sequence feel very stiff. This is especially noticeable during the action sequences, but it serves better in the most intimate moments. CGI anime is still not there regarding a TV show budget.

Does Jim Manage to Rescue Marnie?
After the Swarm escapes the underground tunnels of the planet and goes outside, the surface is completely destroyed. Those who can manage to escape aboard a ship called the Tanker to leave the unlucky ones down on the planet. Jim’s primary focus is saving Marnie, the woman he loves. Marnie is also pregnant, and she is in a very vulnerable state. There are many losses along the way, including Jim’s grandfather, but he manages to meet with Marnie and take her to a safe shelter along with other survivors, such as Walter, a prisoner, and Dr. Hedson.
However, the baby inside Marnie is not aware of the situation outside her mother’s belly and wants to get out. Dr. Hedson cannot perform her duties, and so she recruits Jim to be her hands during the procedure. Marnie and every other character in the room hope for the best. Jim manages to do well while under pressure, and the baby is born. Now Jim has a son and a family with Marnie. It is a very tender moment. However, it is cut short when Tanker pieces come down to the planet.

The team escapes on an armored vehicle and witnesses how pieces from the tanker explode when they crash against the planet’s surface. They follow the heat signature of an escape vessel and find two survivors there. However, these are people Jim didn’t want to see. The survivors are Captain Bark and a woman named Cathy, who was the director of the prison where both Bark and Jim used to work in. For a moment, Jim thinks about leaving the two survivors to their luck, but he saves them and takes them with them.
Bark apologizes for what he did to Jim before and explains what happened to the Tanker. The military thought it was good to take Swarm eggs with them as they left the planet. In true Alien fashion, the eggs let the Swarm out, and the ship falls just like the earth did. Cathy sees that Jim’s team is capable and ready to fight for survival, especially now that they have a baby on board. She explains that she sent a rescue signal, and help is coming in 24 hours. However, they need to be in orbit for the rescue team to pick them up. So they will need to hijack a spaceship.
Does The Planet Survive The Swarm?
A plan is made, and the team gets ready to go to a facility where a huge and powerful railgun is used to deliver fuse to orbit. However, there is a big problem. The facility is surrounded by big swarm numbers. The team splits itself into a setup force and a defensive force as they prepare the shuttle to be launched into orbit and wait for the rescue team. Everyone knows their roles, and even Casper, the AI robot that has been used all this time as an assistant, is responsible for taking care of Jim’s baby.
Jim and Bark used 3D-printed weapons to cause as much damage as possible to the incoming swarm force. The weapons work, but they break quite easily. Meanwhile, William uses containers full of fuel to create barriers that can then explode to inflict even more damage to the swarm. They also expect that this high concentration of creatures will become a calling card for a predator that was seen in the area. One that is large enough to eat thousands of the swarm in a single bite.

However, Doctor Robert, who continues to have a selfish attitude, tries to hijack the shuttle for himself and orders one of the AI to kill Marnie and Jim. However, Casper doesn’t follow the order and defends the family as much as he can against a newer robot model. Walter arrives and punches Robert, sending him to the ground. Marnie stops him before he ends up killing the doctor. Robert is spared and taken into the shuttle with everyone else. The predator appears and starts eating as the railgun launches our heroes into orbit.
Once in space, Jim’s baby is removed from his protection capsule, but it is not breathing. Doctor Robert redeems himself by applying the right technique and bringing the baby back to life. As the rescue team approaches, they focus on what they will do now. They are ready to start a new life, even Walter, a detained prisoner. Jim decides to become a cartoon artist, which is what he has always wanted to do. The series ends with our survivors looking at a new age.
