Welcome to the Ending Explained for Black Mirror, Season 6, Episode 4, titled “Mazey Day.” The episode marks one of those weird episodes of the show that talks more about a sociological concept than about actual technology. It might be that for the first time, Black Mirror abandons the realm of science fiction and jumps straight into Urban Fantasy. This is great, it is not a genre that we often see in media, but still, it feels odd and out of place with the rest of the season and the rest of the show as well. Thankfully, the episode counts with an excellent lead performance that overcomes all its other faults.

The episode focuses on celebrity culture and the obsession people seem to have with celebrities, but also the little respect that is often offered to celebrities when it comes to treating them like the people they are instead of the characters we have in our heads. It is a frightful idea to basically forget about your dignity when it comes to being a famous actor or celebrity. The episodes go deep into creating a situation where the lack of empathy towards others in help feels like the constant way of living instead of being the exception to the norm. This is the shortest episode of the season but also the most raw of them all.

Who Is Mazey Day In Black Mirror?

The episode begins by introducing us to our main character. This is when we meet Jesse, a paparazzi who takes photos of celebrities and sells them to tabloid magazines. Of course, the rarest pictures have better pay, and so Jesse spends most of her time hunting for celebrities who want to keep their secrets a secret. Jesse is well-connected and respected in the paparazzi community. She even has her own secret contacts, delivering to her the latest locations of celebrities.

We see her for the first time waiting for an actor to leave a hotel. When he does, he realizes that this actor has been having sex inside his hotel room. The issue is that this actor is married to a woman, and he has been having sex in the hotel with a man. Jesse takes the pictures. The actor sees her and approaches her. He begs her to give the pictures to him. He offers her money. He says that she is killing him if she publishes those pictures. Jesse pays no attention and leaves the scene as the actor calls an animal from a distance. She sells the pictures for $900.

Jesse’s money situation is not the best, and she seems to be struggling with her roommate. Meanwhile, we meet another important character, an actress named Mazey Day, who is filming a period piece film in Europa. She gets mushrooms from one of the crew members and eats them that night. She becomes quite high and leaves the house she is in. Sadly, this is a fatal error as she also starts driving, and it is a recipe for disaster in her state. The disaster does happen, and she hits a man on the road. She runs from the scene, unaware of whether he is dead or alive.

Meanwhile, Jesse is outside a club waiting for more celebrities to take photos. She is there with her colleagues, two of whom are quite disrespectful to the celebrities. When a celebrity arrives, they try to take pictures from under her skirt and also try to make her angry by saying bad words to her. The insults have an effect, and the celebrity goes into the club, her night ruined. Jesse sees this dreadful behavior, and we see as she decides that this job is no longer for her. She cannot keep treating other people like things. She can do better, she knows it, and we also know it.

Where Is Mazey Day In Black Mirror?

Jesse leaves the job, and she starts working at a coffee shop. She needs the money, or her landlord/roommate will throw her out. One of her colleagues meets with her, and it is there that she is informed that Mazey Day has not been seen for a while and that one of the photo buyers is willing to give 30,000 dollars to the first person who takes a picture of the actress. This is money that Jesse really requires, so she starts calling her old contacts for information. There are only rumors about Mazey Day being thrown out of the set she was filming. Not much else.

We see what is happening to Mazey Day. She is at the home of a big producer. One delivery girl sees her while delivering Chinese food to her. Mazey Day is not well. She has transformed the place into a mess. It seems she has outbursts of violence. Mazey hires the help of a famous “doctor of the celebrities,” who arranges for her to be taken to a special facility. Jesse follows the tip from the delivery girl and finds the house. She stakes out for a while until a black car goes out. Jesse is unsure, but she takes the risk of following the truck.

The truck leads to a diner, but then the driver goes out and spikes her tires. She calls her colleague, and together they find out that there is a retreat for the rich in the area. They reach the retreat, but the doors are closed, of course. The four paparazzi get inside and discover that Mazey Day has been chained to a bed. Jesse finds this really disturbing, and she decides that the right thing to do is to take Mazey Day out of the room and free her from her chains. They get inside, but while Jesse is trying to free Mazey Day, the other paparazzi cannot do anything but take pictures.

The scene feels like something that could be inside Jordan Peele’s Nope. However, there is something off about Mazey Day, other than she is sweating bullets. When the sky splits and the moonlight washes over her, she transforms into a werewolf. Mazey Day kills the other two paparazzi and follows Jesse and her colleague to the diner she visited before. There the sheriff tries to kill the creature but fails. Mazey Day kills everyone in the diner except for Jesse, who shoots her.

The episode ends with a bloody Mazey Day, who was actually transformed into a werewolf by the man she hit in Europe. She asks Jesse to kill her, but Jesse cannot do that. She gives the gun to Mazey Day to do it herself, but not before Jesse takes a picture worth a million bucks.
