Spy x Family: What Is Garden & Who Are Its Members?

There are many interesting characters who appear in SPY×FAMILY and while the major focus has always been on the protagonist trio – Loid, Yor, and Anya – there are numerous side characters who’ve made an impact on the series. But, there are also other aspects that are quite interesting, and some of the organizations seen in the world of SPY×FAMILY are also quite intriguing. The Garden is one such organization, especially since it is very closely related to Yor, and that is why we have decided to tell you all you need to know about this enigmatic organization from the series as a whole.

Garden is an organization of elite assassins

Ostania is a very strange and mysterious location, as you might assume. There are numerous organizations there, but even among them – Garden is special. Basically, no one knows about Garden, save for some members of the State Security Service (SSS), but even that number is quite small. The common people have no clue abut the Garden, and although they have heard of them, most of the stories related to the Garden are considered to be urban legends and no one really has much proof of them and their activities in Ostania.

It is said that Garden has been present for a long time, although their origins have not been explored further. Most of the things we know about the Garden come from Yor’s perspective, either through flashbacks or her not-so-frequent contacts with the Shopkeeper; Yor has been a member of the organization since she was very young. So, what is it? Officially, Garden is a paramilitary organization, but in fact, it is simply a group of extremely skilled assassins who are led by the enigmatic Shopkeeper. He always says that he wants to “help make the world a beautiful place.”

Their targets, referred to as either “clients” or “customers,” are usually enemies of Ostania and the gist of their work is assassinating people. As we have said, not much has been revealed about the organization, but we know that they are highly skilled, well-trained and organized. The state is officially aware of them, but it is not known what relationship they have, as the Garden takes its orders from the shadow government.

The Shopkeeper usually contacts his agents via telephone, but they sometimes come to him personally in his garden, which he cares for, whose location is actually not known, although the garden itself has been seen. And while they usually just kill people, they can also take on other types of missions as well, such as when they protected Olka and Gram Gretcher on board the Princess Lorelei in the Cruise Adventure Arc. They provide their agents with covers and false identities and always prepare for a case in detail.

Known members of Garden

In this section, we are just going to quickly introduce the main known members of Garden and tell you a bit about them.

“Shopkeeper”

The Shopkeeper is the leader of Garden. He is an old man and an exceptionally skilled assassin, but aside from his codename, not much is known about him and his life story. It is known that he had a good relationship with the late father of Olka Gretcher, who had helped him earlier and that is why he accepted Olka’s pleas to help her and her son escape Ostania. He also met Yor when she was young and taught her how to become an assassin, effectively becoming her mentor. It is he who allowed her to live with Loid.

“Thorn Princess”

Yor Forger, born Briar, does not need a proper introduction as she is one of the three protagonists of the series. Before becoming Loid’s wife and Anya’s mother, she was an elite assassin known as “Thorn Princess”. She was excellent in her work and she was one of Garden’s best assassins. Her mentor was the Shopkeeper and it seems that he had a lot of trust in her, as he gave her the task to protect Olka, which was very personal to him. Yor is a central character in the series, and her work for Garden is just a segment of her full story.

Matthew McMahon

Matthew McMahon seems like a polite and very regular old guy, but he is actually an exceptionally skilled assassin and one of Garden’s oldest and most skilled members. His codename within the organization is not known. Matthew serves as a liaison between Yor and the Shopkeeper, but he also goes on missions himself, as he accompanies Yor on the Princess Lorelei and even helped her fight the assassins who wanted to kill Olka and Gram. It is quite obvious that he is very close to the Shopkeeper, and that the latter trusts him a lot.

As far as the other members are concerned, the manga has shown that there are at least three additional members, while the anime has shown at least five additional silhouettes, aside from the three known members. Their identities are unknown and we don’t know if and when they are going to be revealed, but we’re crossing out fingers in hope that they will be revealed.
