‘True Detective’: Why Did Navarro Leave SpongeBob Toothbrush to Qavvik?
‘True Detective’ Season 4 finale just aired and even if the grand mystery was uncovered we’re still wondering what happened to Navarro truly. We know that over the course of the show she was mostly a loner, she cared about her sister but that was pretty much it she didn’t seem to be close with anybody else in Ennis except with Qavvik, who was her romantic interest at one point. At the end of episode Qavvik found SpongeBob toothbrush on his mailbox. Why did Evangeline leave it?
SpongeBob Toothbrush goes back to episode 1
Back in episode 1, we’ve seen that Navarro was pretty much a no-nonsense woman on a mission to stop domestic abuse in Ennis and she wasn’t really here to make friends. She did have a soft spot however for the local “chef” under the name Qavvik who was the owner of the eating place where locals & miners usually converged.
In one scene Qavvik and Navarro can be seen having sex and after they are done Evangeline goes to the bathroom to clean her teeth she sees that Qavvik owns a SpongeBob toothbrush, she calls him out on it mockingly and Qavvik defends the toothbrush saying that SpongeBob is cool, he cleans your teeth and lives in a pineapple under the sea. Evangeline then proceeds to brush her teeth with it while Qavvik watches in horror.
It was such an insignificant scene in the larger scheme of things but it was referenced again in the final episode.
SpongeBob toothbrush is a coded message
In the final episode, we know that Danvers is questioned regarding the whereabouts of Navarro as no one had seen her since that fateful night when Tsalal’s secrets were uncovered. Danvers feigns ignorance and in a separate scene, we can see Navarro walking into the ice fields with the sun rising in front of her. Back at Ennis, Qavvik finds a SpongeBob-themed toothbrush and smiles, seemingly understanding the message.
This was confirmation to Qavvik that Evangeline was okay, that she might return someday and she was alive. It was proof that Evangeline cherished their moments together as only someone who cared about him and their moments together could remember such a stupid and insignificant detail.
It’s also a confirmation that Evangeline herself was contacting him as no one had the knowledge of what his toothbrush looked like except for her. It was a nice touch in the end. And while we did see Navarro with Danvers in the last scene of the episode, we don’t really know whether she will return to Qavvik.
