‘True Detective’: What Happened to Navarro? Is She Alive?
‘True Detective’ Season 4 aired its finale episode and although the biggest mysteries were resolved, some are left unanswered in the true fashion of true detective. Over the course of the fourth season, we saw Evangeline Navarro struggling with her past and her present on top of the possible inherited mental issues that troubled both her mother and her sister. In the last scenes of Episode 6, we can hear investigators asking about Navarro’s whereabouts and Danvers giving them kind of a vague answer. So, what happened to her? Is she even alive?
Ice called Navarro and she answered the call like her sister
Following that fateful New-Years Eve Navarro seemingly left without a trace, leaving a SpongeBob toothbrush for Qavvik and a stuffed polar bear toy for Danvers, including the video of Clark confessing Tsalal’s crimes against the entire populace of Ennis.
In the next scene, we can see Navarro setting out into the ice as the sun is rising. Over the course of the season, she was called by her mother, by the mysterious entity hearing whispers in her head, just like her sister did. Navarro also admitted to Danvers that she has the urge to go out into the ice, just like plenty of people in Ennis. Rose Aguineau at some point told Navarro that the dead want to speak with you because they have something important to tell you or they want you to join them.
During the blizzard at Tsalal, Navarro set out on the ice and almost died only to figure out her birth name, but it seems that the urge did not leave her. That night, Danvers urged Navarro to promise her that she would find a way to return.
Judging by what we saw Navarro did go out into the ice, but she also seemingly returned, as even the investigator mentioned that there were occasional sightings of her in the area. This doesn’t necessarily confirm that Navarro is alive considering that people in Ennis oftentimes see dead loved ones, this is something that Danvers also referenced as well. But it most likely means that Navarro is still alive.

Navarro found a way to return
We know that all people who go into the ice never return because “she” takes them, whoever that might be, but it seems that Navarro did return after finding what she needed to find. In the last scene of the show, we can see Leah and Danvers driving somewhere, and then Danvers is in a cabin overlooking the water, with Navarro standing close to her. Danvers doesn’t speak to Navarro and there’s really nothing to confirm that this version of Navarro we see is not a ghost, or is it?

If Navarro is a ghost, she wouldn’t need a change of clothes and she clearly changed her clothes since setting out on the ice. In that scene, she is dressed warmly in a fur-lined jacket while in the last scene, she only has a light hoodie on. It’s perhaps weak evidence but it’s the best I’ve got. She also has her hair pulled up in a ponytail while in the previous scene, her hair is loose.
Navarro most likely wanted to disappear from Ennis and leave everything bad behind her, it’s also possible that she would end up in prison because of the murder of William Wheeler and the fact that she was the last person to see Clark alive before he committed suicide.
In the video that she left for Danvers to leak, her voice can be clearly heard while Clark is sitting tied on a chair, helplessly. Navarro disappearing was probably a necessity not to implicate the local women in the murder and to stop the investigators from asking too many questions regarding what happened to Clark, Tsalal Men, and what happened that night at Tsalal.
