Clark Gregg from ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Shares Possible Plans for Agent Coulson
Agent Coulson has faced death multiple times throughout ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ and even in ‘The Avengers,’ he just can’t seem to stay dead. It’s almost like a superpower, as it’s often joked about.
Coulson’s most recent death occurred in ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ season 6 episode 5. In his final weeks, he spent time in Tahiti with Melinda May, reflecting on their lives. They discussed May’s idea of establishing a S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy in his honor. While enjoying wine on the beach, Coulson felt chest pain returning. He informed May, and they fell asleep together. Coulson passed away peacefully in his sleep, marking his last known demise so far.
Clark Gregg, known for portraying Coulson in the MCU, discussed potential future plans for the character in an interview with Love in the Time of Hydra: Agents of SHIELD Pod. Gregg expressed optimism about Coulson’s return, especially now that the Multiverse has been opened up, suggesting there are many potential variants of the character still available.
[Coulson isn’t dead] in every timeline. “Look, you are playing in a Multiverse scenario in various timelines without you being like, ‘I don’t know, there’s many Multiverses here’ . . . People are very upset about whether things are canon [or not], and I love that Kevin [Feige] is like ‘The Oz.
Gregg made his debut as Agent Coulson in 2008’s ‘Iron Man.’ Despite Coulson’s death in 2012’s ‘The Avengers,’ he was brought back to life in Marvel’s ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ when it premiered on ABC in 2013. The show concluded in 2020, leading to debate among MCU fans about its connection to the big screen releases as it drifted away from them over time, leaving some unresolved plot holes. Unlike Netflix’s The Defenders, ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ did not receive canonization with the release of ‘Echo,’ although there was speculation about ‘Captain Carter’ being eventually canonized.
Coulson’s death by Loki’s hands remains in the official timeline, but his subsequent resurrections are currently absent from the timeline.
