Dwayne Johnson Talks Politics and Woke Culture: “That really bugs me.”
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is one of the biggest names in Hollywood and an actor and entertainer who has a big fanbase and a lot of influence. Starting out as a WWE star, he soon transitioned to television and movies, becoming one of the most popular action stars in the world. Known, more or less, as a laid-back guy with an open mind, Johnson has recently caused some controversy with his comments about politics, as well as woke and cancel culture.
Before we continue, a quick recap is in order. Back in 2008 and 2012, Johnson publically supported and voted for Barack Obama, but after not voting in 2016, he has been considered an independent voter since 2017. In 2020, though, he endorsed Joe Biden but has stated that he would not be doing it this year, and this actually led to a series of interesting remarks about today’s culture.
While talking to Fox News, Johnson said that while he did endorse Biden four years ago, he now felt that it was a bad decision and confirmed that he would not be endorsing any candidate during the upcoming election. Here is what he said:
“The endorsement that I made years ago with Biden was one I thought was the best decision for me at that time. I thought, ‘I’m in this position where I have some influence and I felt it was my job then to exercise my influence [and] share: This is who I’m going to endorse.’ I’m not going to do that. I was then, the most followed man in the world, and am today, and I appreciate that… but what that caused was something that tears me up in my guts — which is division. That got me. I didn’t realize that then, I just felt like there was a lot of unrest and I’d like things to calm down.
The takeaway after that was it caused an incredible amount of division. I realize now going into this election, I will not do that. My goal is to bring this country together. I believe in that. There will be no endorsement. At this level of influence, I will keep my politics to myself. It is between me and the ballot box. But I will tell you this: Like a lot of us out there, not trusting of all politicians, I do trust the American people and whoever they vote for that is my president and who I will support 100 percent.”

He was also asked whether he wanted to run for President himself, but he rejected the idea, saying that he was not a politician; interestingly enough, he had earlier expressed his desire to possibly run for President, but it seems that the actor has given up on the idea. After the political issues, Johnson was also asked about woke and cancel culture, and it seems that the actor has some issues with these two important social movements:
“Today’s cancel culture, woke culture, division, etc — In the spirit of that, you either succumb to that and be what other people want you to be, or you be yourself and be real … and that might make people upset and piss people off, and that’s okay.”
