‘Bluey’ Praised for Introducing the Series First LGBTQ+ Couple!
A popular children’s show from Australia, Bluey, is now in its third season. The series, which began airing on October 1, 2018, centers on Bluey Heeler, a dog character who explores daily life with his family and friends. Known for its relatable stories, the show has gained a huge following worldwide. However, some have pointed out a lack of diversity in its cast of characters. In response, the latest season brought a notable change.
In a special long episode called “The Sign,” the focus is on Bluey and his family moving to a new home. Alongside this storyline, a supporting character named Pretzel casually mentions his family. He says, “My mums,” revealing that he has two mothers—a lesbian couple. This marks the first time Bluey has included an LGBTQ+ family, a step that stands out for a show aimed at young viewers.
A TikTok user named Margie, who runs an account all about Bluey, shared her thoughts on this moment. She said, “Pretzel is talking about his guinea pig running away, he says my mums. He has two mums and that’s the first gay or lesbian or LGBTQ+ couple confirmed in the show. I love it! I think it was a nice and organic way to do it. It is a really subtle [moment], that a lot of people will miss. It was a natural way to be like some people have two mums and that’s just part of real life.”
Fans quickly showed their excitement online. One wrote, “GAY DOGS IN BLUEY!!! IM SO GLAD FOR THIS. As a person who lived with his mom and her gf at one point in time, I think this is great.” Another said, “THIS IS SO FKING AWESOME.” A third added, “WE FINALLY HAVE GAY PEOPLE IN BLUEY LET’S FKING GO!!!”
This isn’t new territory for children’s TV. Shows like Peppa Pig and Paw Patrol have also featured same-sex couples in recent years. Still, Bluey taking this step feels significant. It shows families of all kinds in a simple, everyday way, without making it a big deal. The episode is streaming now on Disney+ for anyone who wants to watch.
