Kevin Feige Turned Down Ryan Reynolds’ Initial ‘Deadpool 3’ Concept
‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ movie stands out as a pivotal MCU release for numerous reasons. Anticipation is soaring as it marks Deadpool’s entry into the MCU, promises the inclusion of Wolverine and a plethora of cameos, and notably, it’s the MCU’s inaugural “R” rated venture.
However, despite the excitement, Reynolds disclosed in a recent Empire interview that not all initial concepts for the film came to fruition.
Ryan seemed to want to make a big movie in a small way, but Feige didn’t think it would work out.
It was a Rashomon story about Wolverine and Deadpool and something that they got into together, but told from three completely different perspectives. It was a way to make a large-scale movie in a very small way. I went back to the drawing board, and I wrote up about 18 different treatments. Some of them almost like a Sundance film, a budget of under $10 million, sort of using the IP in a way that they previously hadn’t used, and I pitched bigger movies, and I pitched things in-between.
Feige admitted Reynolds had “25 different ideas,” but he was mainly focused on integrating Deadpool and other mutants into the MCU, a task that’s turning out to be quite challenging as time goes on.
“I was very much thinking about how to bring mutants and the X-Men into [the MCU], and I thought it needed to be more than just playing the hits. But the truth is, Ryan is an idea machine. So he may have pitched that to me, but he also pitched 25 other thoughts and ideas.
Karan Soni recently shared that one of the ‘Deadpool 3’ ideas involved the crew embarking on a journey to the North Pole to rescue Christmas. While it’s undeniably amusing, I question if it fits Feige’s plan to integrate mutants and Deadpool into the MCU in a fittingly serious manner. What are your thoughts? Share in the comments!
