George A. Romero’s Final Movie, ‘Twilight of the Dead,’ Adds Milla Jovovich in Main Role
Big news for zombie movie lovers—we’re getting one last ride with George A. Romero’s undead world. The legendary filmmaker, who kicked off the modern zombie craze with ‘Night of the Living Dead’ back in 1968, left behind a final project before he passed away in 2017. It’s called ‘Twilight of the Dead,’ and now it’s coming to life with Milla Jovovich taking the lead role.
Romero built a legacy with his zombie films, mixing horror with sharp social commentary. His work shaped the genre, from the shopping mall terror of ‘Dawn of the Dead’ to the gritty survival tale of ‘Day of the Dead.’ This new movie marks the seventh and final chapter of his ‘Living Dead’ series. He wrote a treatment for it before his death, and others have since finished the script to bring his vision to the screen.
So, who’s Milla Jovovich playing? We don’t have all the details yet, but she’s no stranger to fighting the undead. She starred as Alice in the ‘Resident Evil’ series, taking down zombies and monsters across six films. Her action-hero experience makes her a natural fit for Romero’s world. Alongside her, Betty Gabriel, known for her chilling role in ‘Get Out,’ is also joining the cast, adding more star power to this send-off.
‘Twilight of the Dead’ takes us to a tropical island, where the last humans are stuck between warring groups of zombies. It’s a fresh setting for Romero’s style, promising the same mix of scares and deeper meaning he was famous for. Brad Anderson, the director behind ‘The Machinist,’ is helming this one, and he’s got a knack for tense, emotional stories that should pair well with Romero’s ideas.
I’m excited about the team bringing this to life. Greg Nicotero, a makeup effects legend who worked with Romero starting with ‘Day of the Dead,’ is handling the zombie designs through his KNB EFX Group. If you’ve seen the gnarly walkers in ‘The Walking Dead,’ you know his work—he’s got the skills to make these undead look brutal and real.
Production is set to kick off in March 2025 in Puerto Rico, though we don’t have a release date yet. Romero’s widow, Suzanne Desrocher-Romero, is involved too, making sure the film stays true to what he wanted. She’s teamed up with Roundtable Entertainment to get this done, and it feels like a proper goodbye to a horror icon’s legacy.
For me, seeing Jovovich back in zombie territory is a thrill. After wrapping up ‘Resident Evil’ in 2016 with ‘The Final Chapter,’ she’s ready to tackle a new kind of apocalypse. Romero’s films always had a raw, grounded edge compared to the slick action of her past roles, so I’m curious to see how she fits into his darker, more thoughtful take on the end of the world.
This isn’t just another zombie flick—it’s the last piece of a saga that changed horror forever. With Jovovich leading the charge, ‘Twilight of the Dead’ could be the perfect way to close out Romero’s story. We’ll have to wait and see, but it’s already shaping up to be something worth watching.
