J.K. Rowling Compares Neil Gaiman to Harvey Weinstein Amid New Sexual Assault Allegations
Last year, disturbing allegations of sexual assault have resurfaced involving acclaimed author Neil Gaiman. Initially reported by Tortoise Media, the allegations involve claims from two women who accuse Gaiman of sexual assault during what they describe as a consensual relationship. According to the alleged victims, Gaiman engaged in degrading and non-consensual sexual encounters with them.
Now several months later, Neil Gaiman is facing more sexual assault allegations, which were revealed in a cover story by ‘New York Magazine.’ In response to the claims, J.K. Rowling shared her thoughts on social media, drawing a comparison between Gaiman and Harvey Weinstein.
Rowling, who is no stranger to controversy herself, suggested that the public’s reactions to Gaiman’s allegations reminded her of the initial reactions to Weinstein during the #MeToo movement.
Gaiman, once celebrated for his work on The Sandman, is now facing serious accusations from multiple women, and Rowling’s comments have added fuel to the ongoing debate.
J.K. Rowling commented that the literary community, which was very vocal about Harvey Weinstein before his conviction, has been surprisingly quiet in response to multiple sexual assault allegations against Neil Gaiman.
She pointed out that, like Weinstein’s victims, the women accusing Gaiman share strikingly similar stories, despite having never met each other. Rowling’s statement highlights what she sees as a double standard in how these two cases are being treated by the public.
Like Harvey Weinstein, Neil Gaiman has been accused of sexual assault and is alleged to have used NDAs and financial settlements to silence his victims. Similar to other high-profile figures such as Bill Cosby and Danny Masterson, the accusations against Gaiman involve multiple women who have shared remarkably similar stories, suggesting a consistent pattern of behavior.
One of the women accusing Gaiman, called Scarlett, says she was assaulted in February 2022 after meeting him. She claims it happened in a bath at his house in New Zealand, where she worked as a nanny. Gaiman says their interactions were consensual, but Scarlett argues that his behavior was rough and degrading, with her friends supporting her story.
Another accuser, named K, met Gaiman as a fan at a book signing in 2003 when she was 18. She says their relationship became romantic when she was 20, but it involved unwanted rough sex. K claims that Gaiman forced himself on her despite her saying no.
Neil Gaiman has vehemently denied allegations of non-consensual sex brought forward by two women. He contends that K’s accusations are rooted in regret over their past relationship, while he attributes Scarlett’s claims to a condition linked to false memories, despite the Tortoise report finding no support for this in her medical records.
In addition to denying the allegations, Gaiman criticized the New Zealand police for allegedly disregarding his offer to cooperate with one woman’s complaint in 2022, suggesting deficiencies in their investigation. However, New Zealand authorities responded, asserting they have made extensive efforts to interview key individuals involved, with the investigation ongoing and considering various factors, including the geographical locations of all parties.
