Sigourney Weaver is well known for playing strong sci-fi heroines, having starred in some of the most iconic franchises in cinema history, including Alien, Avatar, and her upcoming role in the Star Wars film The Mandalorian & Grogu.

Her latest sci-fi venture is Apple TV’s The Gorge, set to release on Valentine’s Day. The film follows two elite snipers assigned to opposite sides of a deep, impenetrable gorge, unaware of what truly lies beneath them. Weaver stars alongside Anya Taylor-Joy, who takes on a role reminiscent of the ones Weaver herself played in the past.

Despite having a sci-fi legend on set, Weaver says Taylor-Joy needs no advice when stepping into such a role.

Anya Taylor-Joy doesn’t need any tips from me to play anything,” Weaver said. “Her character, Drasa, is truly unique. She throws herself into the role completely, playing it with incredible energy and confidence. You can tell she’s having a great time bringing Drasa to life.

Drasa isn’t just any character—she’s a highly skilled and fearless Lithuanian sniper, and according to Weaver, “She’s really a badass.” In fact, Taylor-Joy’s performance reminded her of the powerful female warriors in James Cameron’s Avatar movies. “I hope Jim [Cameron] watches The Gorge because I think he’d really appreciate Drasa as a character,” Weaver said. “He’s always been ahead of his time, creating amazing female characters like Neytiri. Drasa fits right into that tradition of strong, fearless women.

Weaver is expected to return for future sequels, including ‘Avatar 3.’ Could Anya Taylor-Joy be the next big name to join James Cameron’s blockbuster franchise? She definitely has the talent, and Weaver agrees, saying, “I’ve been a fan of hers since The Witch and later The Queen’s Gambit. I truly believe there’s nothing she can’t do.”
