Fan-Favorite 2000s Comedy Getting a Sequel from Netflix’s ‘Cobra Kai’ Creators
Harold and Kumar are officially coming back for another wild adventure, and this time, the creators of Cobra Kai are leading the charge.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald, the trio behind Netflix’s hit Cobra Kai, have signed on to write a brand-new Harold & Kumar movie. Hurwitz and Schlossberg will also direct the film, which is being made by Mandate Pictures, now owned by Lionsgate.
This is a full-circle moment for the team. Hurwitz and Schlossberg first launched their Hollywood careers by writing the original 2004 comedy Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, and they made their directing debut with the 2008 sequel Escape from Guantanamo Bay.
John Cho and Kal Penn, who played Harold and Kumar, are expected to return, though their deals haven’t been confirmed yet. Neil Patrick Harris, who had a memorable role as himself in the earlier films, may or may not be back.
The movie is still in early development, but it will bring the same stoner humor and chaotic energy fans love. Hurwitz, Schlossberg, and Heald are also producing under their Counterbalance Entertainment banner, along with Greg Shapiro, who worked on the original movies and later won an Oscar for The Hurt Locker. Dina Hillier will executive produce for Counterbalance.
The first Harold & Kumar film followed two stoned best friends on a wild mission to find a White Castle burger joint. Their journey turned into a hilarious mess of run-ins with cops, cheetahs, and a drugged-out Neil Patrick Harris.
That movie became a cult favorite and spawned two sequels: Escape from Guantanamo Bay and A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas.
In a joint statement, Hurwitz and Schlossberg said, “We’re fired up to bring Harold and Kumar back in a return to the unapologetically R-rated, smoke-filled chaos that started it all. It’s high time they puff and pass their wisdom onto a new generation. Just don’t tell their kids.”
Since the original films, both Cho and Penn have seen their careers grow. Cho played Sulu in the Star Trek reboots and earned acclaim for Searching. Penn starred in House and even worked in the White House under President Obama.
Meanwhile, Hurwitz and Schlossberg have been busy too. They wrote and directed American Reunion, produced Blockers, and, along with Heald, turned Cobra Kai into a global Netflix hit. That series, which recently ended its sixth and final season, blended action, heart, and comedy and even earned an Emmy nomination.
Now, with Cobra Kai wrapped, the team is ready to dive back into the world of Harold and Kumar. And by the sounds of it, they’re bringing the same wild energy fans have been waiting for.
