Nathan Fillion, a star in the upcoming Superman movie, dropped hints about Mr. Mxyzptlk already being present in the DCU during an Entertainment Weekly interview, teasing a wild new direction for the DC Universe under co-CEO James Gunn’s leadership.

Fillion, who plays a Green Lantern, spoke about the film’s focus on a Kryptonian raised among humans. He described Gunn’s vision, saying, “There’s things happening that are reality for this world that we’re about to enter,” including “giant monsters, alien beings, [and] interdimensional imps.”

This points directly to Mr. Mxyzptlk, a mischievous Fifth Dimension trickster known for using reality-warping powers to pester Superman.

Directed and written by Gunn, Superman stars David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult as the iconic villain Lex Luthor.

The story follows Superman’s early hero days, clashing with Luthor and facing new threats like Mxyzptlk (possibly?). While Luthor is a familiar foe, the addition of this oddball character signals a less conventional tone for the DC Universe.

Gunn recently addressed fans on Threads about the term “grounded” for his DC vision. When asked if stories would stick to Earth, he clarified, “grounded” refers to realistic character decisions, not Earth-only settings. This means the DC Universe will blend believable characters with cosmic adventures across planets and dimensions.

The inclusion of Mxyzptlk shows DC Studios is embracing the weirder side of its comics, building on Gunn’s track record of spotlighting unusual characters. With Superman kicking off this bold new chapter, fans can expect a mix of heartfelt storytelling and out-of-this-world surprises.

Bringing Mr. Mxyzptlk into Superman is a daring move that could make the film stand out. His playful chaos is a perfect contrast to Luthor’s calculated evil, and I’m excited to see how Gunn balances the weird with the emotional. It’s a risky but refreshing choice for DC’s new era.
