A new horror film from Barbarian director Zach Cregger is making waves after the release of its second trailer. The movie, called Weapons, puts a spotlight on a terrifying and emotional subject, the unexplained disappearance of children. While many horror stories rely on ghosts or monsters, this one focuses on real-life fears.

In the trailer, Josh Brolin plays a father desperate for answers after 17 children, all from one classroom, go missing. The trailer opens with a heated school meeting where Brolin’s character demands, “I wanna know what happened in that classroom!” His anger grows as he questions, “Why just her classroom!” Julia Garner plays the school principal who seems unsure of what’s going on as tension rises around her.

A young girl’s voice is heard in the background, giving the story a chilling twist. “This is a true story that happened right here in my town,” she says. “A lot of people die in a lot of really weird ways in this story.”

As the trailer goes on, it becomes clear this is more than just a case of missing children. There are flashes of disturbing moments, like a man running through a store with blood on his face. Brolin’s character adds another mystery to the mix when he says, “Those kids walked out of those homes, no one pulled them out.” The trailer raises more questions than it answers.

Cregger wrote the film himself. The cast includes Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, Toby Huss, and June Diane Raphael. His last horror movie, Barbarian, became a surprise success, earning over $45 million worldwide on a small budget. That success likely gave him more freedom to go bigger and darker this time around.

Warner Bros. originally planned to release Weapons in January 2026. But after getting strong reactions from early test audiences, the studio pushed the date forward. It will now hit theaters on August 8.

This move makes sense for Warner Bros., which is already having a strong year in horror. Ryan Coogler’s Sinners made over $363 million, and Final Destination: Bloodlines became the most successful film in that franchise with $280 million earned worldwide.

It looks like Warner Bros. is betting big on horror right now, and Weapons could be their next win.

Zach Cregger clearly knows how to scare people in a way that sticks with them. Instead of jump scares, he digs into real fears. And with Josh Brolin leading the story, the movie has the potential to hit hard emotionally as well as scare audiences. It’s rare for horror to feel this grounded.
