The new Superman teaser is finally here, and fans are freaking out, because it shows Superman getting seriously angry at Lex Luthor. In a short teaser that aired during a Jimmy Kimmel Live! segment, we see David Corenswet’s Superman smashing into Luthor’s office, breaking doors and furniture, and demanding something unexpected: the dog.

That’s right, Superman wants the dog. While it’s not completely clear what’s going on, it’s probably safe to assume he’s talking about Krypto, the Super Dog. Krypto has been shown in a lot of the movie’s earlier promos, so this scene is likely tied to whatever’s going on with him.

Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, just sits there and acts like he has no idea what Superman is talking about. He even casually sips his coffee and denies everything. It’s a short clip, but it gives fans a first real taste of what the rivalry between Superman and Luthor will look like in this new take.

James Gunn, who’s directing the film, has already said that Luthor will be the main villain. He actually revealed this over a year ago. And now, with this new teaser, it’s officially confirmed.

Gunn also gave some insight into what makes his version of Lex tick. While talking to Rolling Stone, he said, “I really understand Lex. I feel like I relate to Lex way more than I wish I did. But for me, Lex looks at Superman like artists look at AI.” He went on to say, “He is the world’s greatest man in so many ways. He’s done these unparalleled things. And then you got a guy who comes in who’s done nothing to deserve the ability to fly and to smash down buildings. And he’s also extraordinarily handsome, too. And all of a sudden, that’s all the world is talking about.”

This idea makes Lex feel more human. He’s not just a power-hungry villain, he’s someone who worked his whole life to be the best, only to be overshadowed by someone who didn’t have to try. Gunn compares it to how some artists feel when people start praising art made by AI more than real human work. “That sort of obsession with being replaced, with being—with your gifts not being seen or passed over — I think is what drives Lex,” Gunn said. “I relate to everything he does. He’s just meaner than I am.”

So instead of just being a bad guy, this Lex Luthor is someone people might actually understand. He’s into science, he wants to change the world, and he can’t stand the idea of someone more powerful getting all the credit.

Besides Superman and Luthor, the movie is bringing in a bunch of other heroes. We’ll see Mister Terrific, Metamorpho, Hawkgirl, and even a Green Lantern. The movie stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and other cast members include Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Sara Sampaio, and Frank Grillo, who’s back as Rick Flag Sr. Milly Alcock is playing Supergirl.

Filming took place in Georgia and Norway and wrapped up back in July 2024. The story pulls some ideas from the classic All-Star Superman comic by Grant Morrison, so fans can expect some emotional and larger-than-life moments.

It looks like this movie is going to give us a Superman who isn’t perfect and a Lex Luthor who’s not just evil, but someone who feels real. James Gunn is trying something different, and from what we’ve seen so far, it might just work.
