Michael Bay Set to Return for New Transformers Movie Despite Critical and Commercial Underperformance of the Last Installment
Michael Bay is set to return as director for a new Transformers movie, eight years after stepping away from the franchise. Insider Matthew Belloni revealed that Bay is working with Paramount on this project and will direct the film.
This marks a big comeback for Bay, who had previously said he wouldn’t direct another Transformers movie after the poor financial results of 2017’s Transformers: The Last Knight. The new movie’s screenplay will be written by Jordan VanDina.
The news says Bay’s return has been in the works since last year when he started talks with Paramount. Initially, Bay was going to come back as a producer, but the possibility of directing the new film soon followed.
Belloni explained this reunion happened because both Bay and Paramount need each other. Since Bay left, the Transformers series has seen a steady drop in box office money. Meanwhile, Bay has struggled to launch his own big projects. Paramount is also working on other Transformers-related movies, including one from Transformers One director Josh Cooley and a potential G.I. Joe crossover.

Paramount faces pressure to start filming a new Transformers movie by 2029 to keep the franchise rights, adding urgency to their plans. Bringing Bay back is a risky move but one that could give the series new life. Despite The Last Knight earning around $600 million worldwide, it was a big drop compared to earlier films, which led Bay to step away.
Bay originally directed the first live-action Transformers in 2007, creating the style and feel that made the franchise famous. His “Bayhem” approach, full of huge explosions and nonstop action, turned the 80s toy line into a massive success.
The first three movies, Transformers, Revenge of the Fallen, and Dark of the Moon, dominated summer box offices and made billions worldwide, even though critics often disliked them.
After the original trilogy, the franchise began to lose steam. The 2014 film Age of Extinction still made over a billion dollars but got worse reviews. The problems became clear with The Last Knight in 2017, which tried to mix Transformers with King Arthur’s legend. It was criticized heavily and made much less money, signaling that the formula was getting old. After this, Bay left the director’s role.
Since then, Paramount tried changing things up. The 2018 movie Bumblebee, directed by Travis Knight, was more focused on story and emotion. It earned good reviews but made a modest $468 million.
The most recent film, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts from 2023, tried to combine the heart of Bumblebee with big action scenes. However, it didn’t reach the billion-dollar mark, finishing with just $441.7 million.
From what I see, Bay’s return could bring back some excitement to the Transformers movies. His style made the franchise what it is today, and maybe he can find a way to refresh it. What do you think?
