Metamorpho Finally Unleashes His Powers in New ‘Superman’ Trailer
The latest Superman trailer has finally given fans a real look at Metamorpho in action, and it’s got people talking. Played by Anthony Carrigan, Metamorpho is one of the many superheroes joining Superman in James Gunn’s upcoming movie. The film is set to hit theaters on July 11, and it’s shaping up to be much more than just a solo Superman story.
Until now, Metamorpho only popped up in a few quick scenes in the teaser trailers. Viewers got a feel for how cool and unique he looked, but there wasn’t much else. That’s changed with the newest trailer, where Metamorpho shows off his powers and creates a massive tornado. It’s a big moment that finally gives fans a sense of what the character can do.
In the comics, Metamorpho is an archaeologist named Rex Mason who turns into a hero after gaining the ability to change his body into different elements. That power explains how he’s able to cause something as intense as a tornado, and even though it’s expected for the character, it still looks awesome on screen.
Anthony Carrigan recently opened up about his role in an interview, saying that it felt good to play a hero for once. He’s best known for playing villains, like Victor Zsasz in the Gotham TV series. Now, as Metamorpho, he’s getting to explore a different side of things.
“It was refreshing to play a superhero,” he said, adding that the role felt personal because of how the character struggles with his appearance and identity. Carrigan has alopecia, a condition that causes hair loss, and he connected deeply with the way Metamorpho deals with his powers and transformation.
“I felt like I could bring some authenticity and truth to it,” he shared. Director James Gunn also saw that connection and thought it added more heart to the character.
To become Metamorpho, Carrigan went through a long and intense makeup process every day. It took five to six hours, with makeup artists gluing on pieces, painting them, and adding layers. Carrigan described the whole thing by saying, “I’m not kidding when I say that I was glued in, I was sewn in, I was completely enveloped. I was tied in… roped in, basically.”
Even though it sounds exhausting, he didn’t mind it. In fact, he said the physical makeup helped him get into the role more than just wearing a suit with CGI would. “It’s worth it because you can actually feel the texture of something. Your brain notices the difference,” Carrigan said.
The emotional side of Metamorpho is also a big part of the film. He didn’t ask to become a metahuman, and now he has to deal with the changes to his body and what that means. Carrigan said those struggles made the character feel more real to him.
He also revealed that Metamorpho isn’t just there to help out Superman. At one point, he’s forced to go up against him. That created an inner conflict for the character. “You’re in a situation where it’s having to hurt someone, having to be an agent of the bad guy. And at the same time, there’s this struggle to want to be good,” Carrigan explained.
Despite the heavy emotions and the long hours in the makeup chair, Carrigan found ways to stay patient. He joked that growing up with two older sisters who liked to put makeup on him helped prepare him for this kind of role.
James Gunn’s Superman is promising big action, new heroes, and emotional depth. With characters like Metamorpho getting time to shine, fans have a lot to look forward to when the movie lands in theaters.
