Christopher Nolan thinks one of his biggest movies didn’t get the love it deserved. He recently talked about The Dark Knight Rises and called it an underrated film in his career. In his own words, “I don’t have a favorite of any of my films, but I think The Dark Knight Rises is an underrated movie. There are things in there that we did that are pretty subversive and pretty shocking. It’s as close as I’ll get to adapting A Tale of Two Cities.” Nolan believes there’s more going on in the movie than people usually talk about, and he sees it as more meaningful than most viewers give it credit for.

The Dark Knight Rises came out in 2012 and closed out Nolan’s Batman trilogy. The story takes place eight years after The Dark Knight. Bruce Wayne has disappeared from the public and given up being Batman. But when Bane, a new enemy with plans to destroy Gotham, shows up, Bruce is forced to return and try to stop him.

Christian Bale returned to play Batman, and he was joined by actors like Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, and Morgan Freeman. Nolan worked with his brother Jonathan Nolan on the screenplay, and David S. Goyer helped come up with the story. The film was influenced by several Batman comics, including Knightfall, No Man’s Land, and The Dark Knight Returns.

Before the movie even hit theaters, it was already getting a lot of attention. Warner Bros. went big on promotion, showing the first few minutes of the film early and releasing dramatic trailers that hinted at a darker, more intense story.

Once it came out, the response was mostly positive. It earned good scores on review sites like Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, and many critics praised it as a strong and emotional conclusion to the trilogy. Audiences gave it high grades too, saying the movie was exciting, well-made, and had a powerful ending.

Not everyone agreed, though. Some thought the film had too many characters or was a bit too long. Others compared it to The Dark Knight and felt it didn’t quite match up, especially when it came to the villain. Bane was seen as a strong presence, but for many, he didn’t have the same impact as Heath Ledger’s Joker from the previous film.

People also started reading into the film’s political side. It came out around the same time as the Occupy Wall Street protests, and some thought the story was trying to send a message about wealth, power, and rebellion.

A few critics even said it felt like the movie was against the Occupy movement or was in favor of protecting the rich. But Nolan made it clear that this wasn’t the case. He said, “We put a lot of interesting questions in the air, but that’s simply a backdrop for the story. What we’re really trying to do is show the cracks of society, show the conflicts that somebody would try to wedge open… but it’s not doing any of those things. It’s just telling a story.”

Nolan also admitted that the film took inspiration from A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. That influence shows in the themes of chaos, revolution, and personal sacrifice. Some fans noticed these connections, especially toward the end of the movie.

While there’s still a lot of debate about the film, it’s clear that The Dark Knight Rises made a strong impact. It was named one of the best films of 2012 by major film groups. Even today, some people think it deserves more praise than it got at the time.

Nolan seems to stand by the film and what he and his team achieved with it. For him, it’s a movie that pushed boundaries and said more than people might realize.
