Squid Game Creator Hasn’t Ruled Out Season 4: “I Never Close the Door”

Just when fans thought Squid Game’s story was finished, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has left the door open for more. After the dramatic end of Season 3, he teased that a Season 4 might happen, or maybe not. He keeps things vague, making fans wonder what’s next for the hit show.

Hwang has said before that the Squid Game universe could grow, but he never gave a clear answer. Now, with the Season 3 finale ending the journey of main character Seong Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, fans have even more questions. Some backstories remain a mystery, and there’s also a hint about a possible U.S. spin-off.

Netflix seems eager to keep the franchise going. Besides the main show, they recently approved another season of Squid Game: The Challenge, a British reality show inspired by the series. This has made fans hope for more, whether it’s another season or a new spin-off.

When asked on Good Morning America about a new season or spin-off, Hwang gave a cryptic response: “There’s a saying, ‘Never say never.’ Yeah, I never close the door… we will see. It’s still up in the air.” This answer has sparked even more excitement, sounding a bit like a line from The Karate Kid, leaving fans guessing.

In October 2024, Deadline reported that Netflix was working on a Squid Game spin-off with director David Fincher attached. Since then, there hasn’t been much news, and fans have been wondering if the project is still happening.

Hwang spoke to Variety and cleared up some rumors about Cate Blanchett’s cameo in Season 3. He said it’s not connected to the Fincher spin-off. “Actually no, not at all. It’s not related to that. All I wanted to have was just an impactful ending, and that’s all that was to it. Honestly, I haven’t heard officially from Netflix about David Fincher creating a Squid Game,” he explained. “I have heard the rumors of course though. But again, it was just the ending that I wanted for Season 3.”

So for now, the future of Squid Game is still uncertain. Hwang Dong-hyuk hasn’t ruled anything out, but he’s also not promising anything. Fans will just have to wait and see what comes next.
