Amazon Prime Video Just Added a Must-Watch Classic Thriller to Its Lineup
Amazon Prime Video has just added a movie that many people call one of the greatest thrillers ever made. The film, which also ranks among the top movies of the 2000s, is now available for streaming. It’s called No Country for Old Men, and it’s a crime thriller directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. This movie originally came out in 2007 and was based on a novel by Cormac McCarthy.
When No Country for Old Men was first released, it was a huge hit with both critics and moviegoers. According to Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 93% rating from critics and 86% from audiences.
On Metacritic, it has an impressive score of 92 out of 100, showing that it was loved almost everywhere. The movie went on to win four Oscars at the 80th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor. It also had eight nominations in total, more than any other film that year.
The story is set in West Texas in 1980 and follows Llewelyn Moss, a Vietnam War veteran who finds a case of money in the desert. This discovery triggers a violent chase involving Anton Chigurh, a hitman sent to recover the money, and Sheriff Ed Tom Bell, who tries to make sense of the chaos.
Javier Bardem plays Chigurh, Josh Brolin plays Moss, and Tommy Lee Jones plays Sheriff Bell. The movie also features Woody Harrelson and Kelly Macdonald in key roles.
Javier Bardem received a lot of praise for his chilling role as Chigurh. Many critics said he gave one of the best performances of the year. The Coen brothers, known for their unique style, were also praised for the way they told this dark and suspenseful story. Richard Corliss from Time magazine even said the movie was “the best of the year”. Peter Bradshaw from The Guardian called it “the best of the [Coens’] career so far.” Meanwhile, David Stratton from ABC’s At The Movies said, “Hitchcock wouldn’t have done the suspense better.”
While most reviews were positive, not everyone was impressed. Some critics felt the story lacked emotional depth or didn’t develop its characters enough. Stephen Hunter from The Washington Post thought the film was “all chase” without much focus on character development. Still, these negative opinions were in the minority.
Years later, the film continues to be remembered as one of the Coen brothers’ finest works. Director Denis Villeneuve even called it their “magnum opus” in 2023.
No Country for Old Men was not just a critical success, it made money too. With a budget of about $25 million, it earned over $170 million at the box office worldwide.
Now that Amazon Prime Video has added it to its collection, many viewers will get a chance to watch or revisit this classic. For anyone who enjoys tense, dramatic thrillers, this is definitely one to put on your watchlist.
