Google Quietly Starts Making Movies And Shows To Make Tech Look Cool
Google is now working on movies and TV shows, but not in the way you might expect. According to Business Insider, the company has started a new project called 100 Zeros. This project isn’t about YouTube videos or placing Google products in every scene. Instead, it’s about working with Hollywood to make people see technology, including AI and futuristic gadgets, in a more positive way.
100 Zeros is not a typical movie studio. It’s part of Google’s Platforms & Devices team, which also handles Android. The idea behind 100 Zeros is to help create stories that show new technology as something exciting and helpful, not scary.
That name, 100 Zeros, comes from the word “googol,” which is a 1 followed by 100 zeros.
Instead of focusing on YouTube, Google wants to work with big players like Netflix, Amazon, and Apple TV+. The company hopes that by teaming up with real movie and TV professionals, it can help tell stories that make people feel better about modern tech. Google is working with Range Media Partners on this project.
The team from Range includes Penny Lin, Casey Durant, and Tony Nguyen, while Rachel Douglas is managing the whole partnership. On Google’s side, Jonathan Zepp is leading the effort.
Rachel Douglas told Business Insider that “This initiative is different in that it’s staffed by full-time people who come out of Hollywood and are housed at and supported by Range.”
Google and Range have already started small. Their first project was an indie horror movie called Cuckoo, which starred Hunter Schafer from Euphoria. The movie opened with the 100 Zeros logo, showing the kind of younger, trendier audience Google wants to reach. More recently, they’ve worked on a short film project called AI On Screen, which is about stories featuring AI.
Two films are already being made: Sweetwater, a story about an AI that answers fan letters after its famous owner dies, and another film called LUCID, though details about that one are still secret.
A Google spokesperson explained the company’s goal by saying, “We’re committed to responsibly supporting creative expression and exploring the possibilities of technology through storytelling.”
In the end, Google isn’t just making tech. Now, it’s trying to tell stories to help people think tech is cool again.
